I was mincing around looking for pics from the making of the new Matrix movie when I came across a couple of interesting pictures from behind the scenes on the first one.

The cameras are the ones used to make the famous bullet-time swoop movement with Neo and the agent on the building roof.

I don't recognize the body. Anyone?

what exactly did they shoot with this setup? Hard to believe that it was a flying bullet - not because it's impossible, but because these things are done with CGA these days.

the cameras set up this way was to capture the "freeze in mid air and rotate around the subject" shots...specifically the scene with Trinity in the very beginning of the original Matrix movie and the fight scene between Neo and the agent in the subway where they are both horizontal, in mid air, firing their guns at each other.

Pretty sure it was for those panning shots where the actor seemingly froze in mid air and the "camera" panned around in a circle.

..it was the cheapest 'pro' Canon SLR they could find.

By sequencing the shutter releases, you can stop time on the shot, and move in three dimensions around a frozen moment.

Or you can alter the trigger time, so that the pan takes place in slow motion.

All done via computer control.

You have to map the positions of the cameras into the computer to comp the final shot as a CGI, and shoot against a green mattte screen so you can drop in the background later.

At the time, this was state of the art....then it appeared on every movie and TV advert known to man...remember that GAP commerical that used the same technique!!

The 35mm frames from the bodies were digitised for the final FX sequence, and are a higher quality than the usual movie footage.

Just the concept is awesome...what an idea....

I bet they're not using 'L' glass. Can you imagine walking into a shop and saying, I'd like to buy 140 of your 35m f1.4L lenses please! In fact sod that, just buying 140 50 1.8II would fry the assistants brain. Which is my guess as to what they would use.

Anyone know?

Simon

A black box recorder and a silver one :-)

Loads of glass: A conservatory, a greenhouse, a set of 12 matching wine glasses, and a nice decanter to go with them.
A table and a whole bunch of other stuff.

The orignal post missed some of the best pics showing just how many cameras are used...

Check out the ones 3 banks high!

...being able to control sentinels outside of the matrix? Is Zion really a matrix too?

If people can talk religion on this forum, then by-golly I can talk Matrix!

I have to stop reading now... the film doesn't come out in the UK till next Friday. Don't spoil it for me I've been waiting a long time. I remember the first film when I finally found out what the matrix was. I was like "no way".

Can wait to see Neo kick some agent butts. And Ms Foss in that rubber suit.

Simon.

It didn't occur to me that that was a spoiler until it was too late.
