DPP for development, some chroma NR for higher ISO, no luminance NR.

Then as TIFF in PS, some further NR via Topaz if needed (rarely, cause you always loose detail).

At the end, sharpening via PS action "Ultra-Sharpen", which uses PS built-in functions like unsharp mask for edges only in LAB mode. One of the best methods around.

....Sharpening is the last thing I do. I view at 100%, then use the sharpening tool in PSE8.

No, I think you've come to the wrong conclusion if you think that the 7D is somehow unique in its need for NR. Low ISO noise (ISO800 and under) is reasonable and pretty comparable to its predecessors. In general, I only need to worry about it if I'm heavily cropping an image, at which point NR tools within LR seem to do the trick nicely and with minimal effort. At 1600 and above, I believe the 7D actually does somewhat better than its predecessors in controlling noise -- quite a bit better than the 50D specifically IMHO.

It probably didn't get an "uncritical review" as you state because the amount of noise you see is well within what's normally expected (and certainly was at the time it was introduced). Gradual inroads in NR are happening in APS-C, but I doubt you'll see dramatic differences generation to generation barring some major and unexpected change in sensor technology.

I use the built-in noise reduction, both for High ISO and slow shutter. It does the job for me. For anything else too noisy, I try to avoid using my 7D and use my 6D.

There are other references to this phenomenon in other places as well...just google iso 160 less noisy.

I've been using only multiples of ISO 160 for several years now and have been very pleased with the results. I still need some NR some of the time, but it's a lot less than before.

I think you need to improve your reading comprehension. That's not at all the summary. The noise of the 7D is actually very well controlled, and, if you use Lightroom, you have to do very little work to "get rid of it". If you shoot RAW, which you should to get the best out of the camera, you have to process the files. That means you have to choose settings for things like NR. Simply choose the right settings, and you'll be fine. You can even define presets for different ISO levels. It's very quick and easy. If you're not prepared to do the minimal work required to get good images out of a sophisticated piece of photographic equipment, why on earth did you buy it in the first place? All digital cameras have noise. What you are prepared to live with and what you are prepared to do about it is up to you
