7D Bug/s

However the sensor staining issue can be seen in the following shot:

If you look carefully, there are two large round spots in this image (which has no cropping, just downsized). One spot is on the right at around 2 o'clock and the other on the lower left closer to the edge of the frame at around 8 o'clock. My 50D also had this but just in the one position; the top right and in almost identical spot to the 7D (which presumably is not a coincidence). Such spotting only becomes evident at magnifications of 3x or more with small f stops.
mpe65 is merciless in exposing even slightest pieces of flotsam on a
sensor's area, esp. at 5x defocused, but of course you do know this,
so I assume you must be thinking of something else - but... what?
a residual droplet dried out after wet cleaning??

I agree that the MPE65 shows every little piece of dust and flaw. I have wet cleaned the sensor on several occassions now and the stain has not changed. I suspect that it is a sensor defect and, as mentioned, my 50D had this as well. You can see this in the following image (taken with the 50D):

Notice the round spot near the tip and slightly above the mosquito antennae.

Kind regards
Stephen

At the image sizes posted the banding is not obvious, it can only be seen on full size shots. Fortunately for the book I am doing each page is only A5, and so the images will be much smaller and banding will not be noticable
Excellent images Stephen, really world class.

Does the banding show itself only when you do extreme macro work or on any full size shot? What size do you call full size? I'm asking this mainly because I find it incredible you cannot publish over A5 size, I would throw a camera in the bin with a restriction like that.

I haven't noticed any banding on my 7D under normal use, ie well exposed shots printed up to A3 size, I have seen some banding at 100% by pushing the exposure two or more stops.

concerning stains - I'm using mpe at 5x, and f/11, defocused of course,
as an aid in localizing any debris on my sensors, and it takes sometimes
many passes of wet clean to get rid of the most obnoxious :(

as to the possible banding - what do you think of the following
scenario:

does it constitute a reasonable use (without going to extremes in PP)?

I also use my MPE65 in a similar manner when cleaning the sensor. Lately I have been doing some focus stacking taking in the order of a 100+ shots for one stack - now this really does show off dirt on the sensor.

I am not going to any extremes in order to visualise the banding ; it just shows up in the uniform blue areas. I suspect that if the background was underexposed and dark you may not see any banding.

Kind regards
Stephen

Hi Rod, thanks for the compliments. The banding only shows in extreme macro with very uniform background. It is not dramatic, more annoying and dissappears with a slight reduction in image size.

I was probably not clear on the publishing aspect. As you are from Australia, you may be familiar with CSIRO publications which focuses on Australian flora and fauna, and these texts are typically around A5 in size (in fact just slightly larger). I am not saying that I can only print at this size, this is what the publishers print their books at. I have printed images on my Canon ipf6100 (which is a 24" printer) up to one metre in length from images taken on the 7D and no banding could be seen.

Kind regards
Stephen

Thanks for the lowdown Stephen, your explanation is more than adequate and makes perfect sense.
