For those of you looking to use the Canon EOS app for Android, I heartily recommend an alternative, DSLR Controller. You may have used this tethered, but I've found it works perfectly via wi-fi with 70d (at least with my Sony Xperia S).

Purchase from --> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.dslrcontroller

Setup guide --> http://dslrcontroller.com/guide-wifi.php

If your phone/tablet can act as a portable wi-fi hotspot, the phone and camera can connect directly using the PC connection mode on the 70d (do not use the phone connection mode.)

It took me a few go's to set up, but once done and saved as a connection set, its easy to do, possibly more so then running the official EOS app for android, which I've found frequently loses connection when the camera/phone sleeps.

Just some of the advantages over the official app:
  • Multiple bracketing modes (focus, exposure, ISO, aperture) with 9 or more images
  • Focus peaking
  • Timelapse capture
  • and more...
I think it has even more features than the PC/Mac EOS Utility software!

While I probably won't use it often, I think the low price makes it worthwhile to have just in case.

Unfortunately, I have no idea whether there is an equivalent iPhone/iPad app, but I hope there is.

Thanks Nicholas, finally got it to work after finding out how to make my tablet (Asus) a WiFi hotspot. Whether I will use it often is another thing. However, it is there when I may require it.

Reg.

Thank you for that information. I tried the EOS Android app today, and was disappointed at the functionality and also couldn't easily find the key to their icons (not all intuitive). A clerk at the local camera store where I bought my 70D seemed to have full functionality on his cell phone, not sure what app he was using (but will stop by to find out!)

Thanks for the steer...I had seen this in the Google App market when downloading the free Canon EOS App, and it seems to be getting great reviews.

One question...you mention that you are using your Adnroid phone in Wifi Hot Spot mode...my provider (Verizon) charges ($15/mo?) for this, which adds up if you don't need it for any other applications...are you being charged for this by your cell service provider??

I just checked Verizon..yikes,$30/month to act as an internet WiFi hotspot, but it seems that is not required. According the Chainfire's web site, I just need either a TV WiFi stick or another android phone that can be programmed to act as a hotspot...correct me if I'm wrong, but you need one phone tethered to the camera with a USB cable to act as the hot spot, another to act as the DSLR controller?

I saw another posting (about tethered 7D use) where someone using DSLR Controller stated that the phone must be rooted. The Chainfire people say rooting is not a requirement for most phones...guess the only way to find out is to try it!;>)) Sure is tempting...

Hello,

I have also Canon 70d, but i have Samsung Glaxy s3 smartphone, and many days now since i had download the dslr controller app, tried to connect it without using any wires but without any success.

Is it possible to give some more detailed directions what exactly have you done with that?

Thanks in advance
