256MB Sony memory stick

Who said I'm a pro documentary photographer? I'm not.
I never suspected for a second you were. Pompous and pretentious, maybe, but not a pro documetary photographer.
If you are, then why are you using a 717? Uh, GET A 1-Ds! THE 717
ISN'T A PRO CAMERA.
Um, no, I have a 707. I never implied for a second that I was a "pro documentary photographer" either. I'm just a happy snapper who knows that it sometimes takes more than one try to get a good shot, and who would feel much more comfortable with a 512Mb MS in his camera than a 128Mb one. It's not the end of the world, by any means, but it's a perfectly reasonable expectation, and doesn't warrant holier-than-thou carp (sic) from people who don't happen to feel the same way.

Needless to say, another thing I'm not is a Sony Corp groupy, unlike some on this forurm.
And thanks for the sarcasm, it does so much for the overall tone of
the forums.
You're welcome, I'm glad it livened up your day. The point is this, though: it's funny how people who want larger capacity memory sticks give sound reasons for it (cheaper price/Mb, more convenience as less likelihood of mid-stream memory card changes, concern that going with a proprietary solution has taken them down a technological dead-end, more video for those who use the video feature of the camera), whereas the people who for some odd reason actually don't want improved products resort to judgmental nonsense like "Shooting everything that moves isn't my goal; I still try to wait for a good shot and always err towards quality over quantity." I'm sorry, but that's just bizarre, and definitely deserves a sarcastic reply.

Cheers,
Pete

Pete,

I sometimes also find it very odd in this Forum too. I read this Forum very frequently and have more than once amased by the attitude of some members. To them Sony marketing is successfully and therefore, it must be right in everything. If you question something, you are a "complainer". Just sit there and Sony would arrange everything for you nicely. Be contended and be a happy customer. There is no use to suggest becuae Sony has its own logic to follow and it would not give a damn attention to this minority of customers. If you do not like it, go away. This is a free world. This applies to RAW, capacity of MS, downloadable firmware fix, ....

OK fine. Lets see how Sony is going to handle this shutter timing problem just reported lately. Would it make another recall? or would it just brush it aside, insisting that there is nothing wrong? How about if there is another recall and then more problems show up (which I would not be surprised at all with today's complexity of software involved)? If Sony has to make recall for every problem, it cannot gain much on the product. So, as more problems show up, it may be very attempting for Sony just to ignore the existence of certain problems. All these point to a solution: downloadable firmware fix. I know, I know. There would just be someone jumping out and say it is simplest not in Sony's interest, ... whatever. Are we Sony's customers or shareholders?

I would be happy if the memory stick capacity is large enought to hold about 150 pictures. So two memory stick is good enough for me for a day's shooting on an interesting trip.

I am still seriously considering 717 and may buy it around this X'mas. Therefore, I am not a Sony basher. I just buy whatever I think is suitable for me. I can overcome the problem of the limited capacity of MS by other means. But it does not mean that larger capacities are not welcome. I like to have choices. What is the concern about asking Sony to give us more choices on MS capacity? I simply cannot comprehend the complain about "complainers".

I do not think that Sony cannot produce MS of larger capacity due to technical reason. If a SD of physical size half of that of MS can now have a capacity of 512M, Sony should be able to produce a MS of 1G without too much difficulty. Somehow, I do not think that it is a technical problem. I cannot believe Sony is 2 or more generations behind (if you count 256M, 512M and 1G as generations of memory technolgy). Sony has the capability. Sony must be up to something. Either it is due to its marketing strategy, or a significant change in direction or a new technical solution due to annouce. In the mean time, we can just discuss and wait. dpReview is a great venue and lets use it.

Regards,

K. Tse

Non issue or not, I would at least like to have a CHOICE but as it stands, competition is so much past the memory stick it's ridiculous.

Just because there's a bigger tripod, doesn't mean I'll buy it and just because there is a car that'll do 200 mph doesn't mean I'll buy it BUT, I'd like to have a choice.

I personally think 40-50 pics is fine, especially considering most of my normal photography would only give me 36 shots anyway and YES, I also think it's better to have several 128MB sticks in case that ONE big stick gets messed up but again, where's my choice?

George
Trophersky,

You nailed it. This whole memory stick thing is such a non-issue
it's ridiculous.

...I got a CD400 (ok, so it's not a 707, it's not got 5x zoom and a bit more noise... :-) and got me around 10+ Gig of those mini CDs for around $30!

MS size is not an issue for me!! Or is it? Darn, I have Clie... wouldn't it be nice if I could put even more MP3s in there?

Just go out there, take some pics and thank your lucky stars that Sony made the Memory Sticks reusable!! :-)

Cheers,

Lucky you indeed.

I'm seriously looking at buying the Super DigiBin:

http://www.leadingspect.com/index.htm

I can put up with swapping MS but with the nice ability to not be restricted so much in total capacity! 20GB is wonderful and all without the need for a PC. 306grams.

This unit looks to be the cheapest one I can source locally, don't need an LCD TFT screen so it will serve its purpose very nicely!

Other models seem far too expensive for what they offer.
