20-70 Filters - Protruding front element

I've been considering getting a protective filter for my 20-70 (keenly aware of the debate around this subject) to serve as a light scratch, fingerprint and biological shield against my toddler. :-P It seemed like a good idea after our recent trip to the beach.

I noticed that the front lens element is quite convex on the 20-70. It protrudes far into the filter thread zone. Is anyone using spin-on filters with this lens? It seems like the filter could bottom out on the front glass element before the threads bottom out.

Would I need extension rings or a different filter system?

I read Roger Cicala's blog post about this happening on a Canon lens.

This lens vignettes a lot. I would not use any filter (I use none on any of my 34 lenses

use the supplied hood

Mine has an Urth 72mm uv filter on it without a clash between the front element and filter glass. I see what you mean about low clearance.
