Gorgeous place and photos. I was there when I was 19, haven't been there since but I have reservations booked at the Yosemite Lodge for march of 2004, I'm very much excited about driving out there again! I live in NJ so it's not a quick hop.

Robert,

Have a great time - it will be cold in March but that is also a time when it won't be packed to the gills with tourists. Even in the cold, there were 15 photographers fighting for a spot for the sunset shot on the bridge looking at Half Dome....

John,

Beautiful images, I love the atmoshperic style, it really brings through a quiet and powerful evocative sense of such a special place.

It looks like you were probably freezing your ass off though ;

Keep up the great work. BTW, the images would likely make for a terrific multimedia slide show with some of the software out there to do that.

Cheers,

Hi John,

It is no wonder to me that you are recharged!

Lovely images in your gallery and it looks to me as if you visited that place at a wonderful time of year.

The weather really enhances the images for me compared to those shot in high summer.

Very nice images my compliments to you.

Also I like your "moments with Hanna" gallery ... very nice idea to do in those stages and she has a great cheeky expression in some of them.

Hope to see you in samples more often.

Very nice images John. Those must have been magical mornings in the chilly mist. Are those coyotes?

In the spring of 2001 my wife and I (from Canada) were visiting relatives in L.A. We rented a car and drove up and through Sequoia and Kings Canyon for about 4 days. Absolutely the most diverse and beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Very impressed with the cleanliness and pristine state of the parks... much better than many here in Canada. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to make Yosemite.
Your pictures make me realize that I need to make time!

You said that you did some multiple imaging. Do you mean you took the same shot at different exposure settings so that you could get both the light and dark areas exposed properly? If so, with your camera are you able to change exposure settings on the cam from a remote?... as not to move the camera between shots?

thanx and keep posting

Jason

Zane, thanks for the kind comments. It was cold but I had long underwear on, good gloves, a killer hat and Grabber Mycoal Mini-mini Heaters. These little packets get to 135 degrees for 7 hours. Put them in your pockets (or socks) and they keep you really warm when you need them. Highly recommended !

Thanks again.

Thanks Jason (and Mark in the earlier post) ! I appreciate the comments and yes next time you are anywhere close to Yosemite, you have to make time to visit. It is a truly magical place that is like no other. I've spent time in Sequoia and Kings Canyon and they are beautiful but all of the pieces are not placed so perfectly like they are in Yosemite.

As to exposure, I use the Canon 10D 6.3 megapixel Digital SLR. It has auto bracketing so I can say I want a over and a under exposed image of + - 2 stops in one third increments. I usually set it to plus/minus 1 stop from what my meters say the optimum photo is overall. I use a very sturdy tripod and shutter release cable so that I'm not touching or moving the camera and I take 3 photos one right after the other. The 10D automatically adjusts the shutter settings so that I get 3 different exposures. My normal one, one brighter and one darker. I then load all 3 into Photoshop and use a digital blending technique that is based on this tutorial:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/digital-blending.shtml

This technique allows me to get a lot more dynamic range in my photos than I could with a single shot. These digital sensors are not very dynamic so they overexpose or lose dark detail very easily. This technique allows a lot more dynamic range to be placed in the photo.

Hope this info helps and I'll post more soon, I promise !

Best,
John Lehmkuhl

Beautiful shots, John. And you have a fine hand with the blended exposure technique, it looks very natural.

By strange coincidence I see you have a steaming tree image in your gallery. I just posted a Yosemite steaming rocks image :)
