I guess 1Password 8 for M1 Macs are subscription only.

I was wondering when this would happen. . . 1Password support has been rather antagonistic toward customers who have stuck with classic licenses. No wonder: With a customer base of over 15 million, subscriptions result in a huge positive cash-flow for the company.

Since 1Password is mature tech we are unlikely to see much in the way of new features or improvements in service. I have upgraded only when I had to and I've saved a lot of money compared to the subscription option.

I haven't kept up with all of 1Password's competitors but I know that some have also switched to the subscription model. I am going to consider my options but since I have over 561 items stored in my local vault, switching to another password manager may be difficult, if not impossible. I imagine that I will learn more here in this thread.

1Password 7.7 (latest version) has changed Trash which had been around 15 years to Archive and there is now a new Direct Delete feature. This confused a lot of users. 1Password 8 will have Archive and not Trash. Some users had a separate Archive Vault for Archival purposes.

I believe that Apple is beefing up keychain to be much more fully featured like 1password. Seems like a strange time for 1password to require a subscription. For me 1password has become a bit complex with many unneeded features that don’t always improve anything.

Subscription was available 6 years ago (2015). Now, subscription will be a requirement in future 1Password versions. With each new version, the device requirement will increase too. My 4" iPhone SE, although it supports iOS 14 and 15, is already struggling with iOS, other than being used as a phone.

The new OS, currently in beta, has a password preference pane that shares via iCloud. Might be worth waiting to check that out before making any big decisions.

Rather than use an Authenticator like Google or Microsoft Authenticator. 1Password can generate One Time Passwords/Multi Factor Authentication/Two Factor Authentication.

I bought 1password in the era where it was 1 time buy advertised in 2017. Then my application stopped to work and was trying to force me for subscription and that was the last time i used the application. i hate when i pay and cant use the app..

Now i am working with keychain and no issues

I recall receiving free 1Password upgrades from 1Password 4 or 5 to 1Password 6.8 the last 1Password version to work with MacOS El Capitan.

Good for them; nice to see they're doing well.

I struggled along with the standalone until relatively late, but it was a pain. And I found Dropbox to be rather unreliable on some other devices, which compounded the issue. It just made sense to use a system where 1Password was involved end to end. And since switching it's been a breeze.

I've used Apple's Keychain too, but don't like it, and not just because it's limited to Apple. Not as full featured. I've come to use 1Password for all kinds of stuff, from my vaccine passport to software licenses to a fishing license.

While I prefer Time-Based One-Time Passwords (TOTP) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for my online accounts, I don't need it when encrypted data resides on my Mac. I would accept nothing less when storing password manager data on a server.

Dropbox is designed for syncing; it is not a backup service. I currently do not sync my 1Password data. Cloud-based syncing services vary in their support for MFA and encryption. If sensitive data is being synced, the service should offer encryption and MFA for account access.

I need to learn more about that lack of folder support. . . I am a dedicated folder user; I've never adopted the use of tags.

I have been using 1Password for many years and I have only paid for major upgrades. The main benefit for me of the standalone license is that I can keep running an older 1Password version through multiple Mac OS upgrades and by using an older OS version. (I am usually a late adopter of major OS upgrades.) 1Password 7 is working fine on my 2018 Mac Mini running Mojave and my wife's 2020 MBA running the latest version of Big Sur.

If your 1Password app stopped working it may have occurred because you upgraded the Mac OS without also upgrading 1Password at some point.

Beyond the ability to sync your data among all of your devices, I do not see an advantage of not having a local copy of your vault. I consider a local vault to be a "backup" of the Cloud vault. Hopefully 1Password stores customer data on multiple servers at different geographic locations for better data security. But I still want to have physical control over my data.

Earlier I asked what happens if your Internet is down and you need to access the data but I haven't received an answer yet. . .

Correct me if I am wrong. . . I think that if you don't have the optional iCloud "optimization" enabled and you have sufficient storage on your Mac, you should have a copy of your Vault on your Mac.

I have recently been trying to fully grok how iCloud works and I admit that it has been something of a struggle. . . I have yet to experience the Ah Ha! moment where everything makes perfect sense, so I am still working at it. LOL
