Ordered it yesterday from Berger Bros. :-)
Question: Opinions on this lens:
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
I got the cam with the kit lens to get me started.
Thanks for any advice.

....to enjoy your camera!! Mine is arriving on Tuesday! (One of the first things I will do is update the firmware before even starting.) Oh...if your using CF cards from another camera, reformat them so they don't start at a higher folder number.

My recommendation to any new photographer is to learn what you have thoroughly, and to hold off buying new gear until you are (1) constrained by what you have, and (2) very clear about how the new gear will specifically change your results.

Hi Judy. I know about the cf card (I've had a G3 for a bit over a year).
Only problem I see so far is..........
It's too nice to use! LOL
Thanks again!

My recommendation is always to shoot awhile seeing what range you are missing and then choose a good lens in that range for your next one. I shoot heavily in the wide (under 50mm) so most of my lenses (both zooms and primes) are in that range. Each of us is different with different subject interests, different needs for available, low light shooting versus good light outdoors, etc. I'd work with this lens a bit, then do some research. I'd also recommend spending time in the lens forum where you will get a lot more specific lens info.

Have fun with your new 20D.

Right on, I am ditching work today waiting for the UPS man myself.
It says out for delivery at 5:04am and it is 8am here!! Getting
close, can't wait!!
Ditching work! LOL Now that's what I call a good reason!
You're gonna love it.

I have red abaut the new firmwhare, but the site where it should be, don't open. And there doesn't exist any information that new firmwhare should be available. I hope I am wrong. Jouni

...I don't think they have it up yet. I'm just assuming it will be there by Tuesday. Sorry if I confused you.

That is the kit lens that came with my Elan II several years ago. Although, I think my 28-105 is the previous model, not the II. Same f-stops though.

It's been a decent lens for me, but I'm nowhere near the capability and experience levels of most on this board. I think most people on this board would tell you to save your money and get a "faster" lens.

Like others have suggested. Try shooting with the lens you've got first and then see what you think you might need. Remember your dealing with the 1.6x factor on your new 20d too. So that 28-105 lens is effectively a 45-168 lens. That's neither here nor there. Just something to keep in mind.

So, IMO, it's a decent lens for snapshot photography and such, but I don't think many serious photographers would use the lens. Which probably says a lot about me because I'm using that lens on my 20d. :) Along with my 100-300 f/4.5-5.5. Again not a super expensive lens, but at least it gets me some range till I can afford better glass, as they say.

Good luck!
