Finally the folks at JASC listened and have produced the next release to the popular Paint Shop Pro 8.10 but currently in Beta release.

The following is an excerpt from JASC Forum:
http://forums.jasc.com/default.asp?action=9&read=10108&fid=34

" Welcome to the Paint Shop Pro 9 beta preview! This preview is designed to introduce you to the new version of Paint Shop Pro and help you get a jump start on learning the product before it's available in final form.

We're excited about this new version of Paint Shop Pro and are sure that no matter your favorite use of the program - whether editing photos, designing graphics or creating artwork - that you'll find new tools and features to spark your imagination and creativity. Some of the exciting new features in Paint Shop Pro 9 include:

Innovative digital photography filters - the Digital Camera Noise Removal filter scans photos and removes image noise introduced by the digital camera system while intelligently preserving normal image textures. The Chromatic Aberration Removal filter helps eliminate the colored glows that often appear in digital photos. The Fill Flash filter corrects the underexposure of shadows in photos, while the Backlighting filter helps compensate for over-exposed areas surrounding the subject of a photo.

Raw Camera image support - commonly known as "digital negatives", Raw Camera images contain the unprocessed sensor data captured by digital cameras. Paint Shop Pro 9 includes integrated support for Raw images from popular camera models by Canon, Fuji, Kodak, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus and Pentax. You can set custom white balance, exposure and sharpening levels when converting Raw Camera images for use in Paint Shop Pro.

Realistic painting tools - new "Art Media" tools allow you to create digital artwork that accurately emulates real-world media and painting styles. The new Mixer palette is an off-canvas area to experiment and mix custom colors together, while artists of all levels can use Tracing as an easy way to repaint a photograph or other image using realistic brush strokes.

Flexible drawing and text tools - the new Rectangle and Ellipse shape tools make it easier than ever to create buttons, banners and other custom graphics. The new Symmetric Shape tool allows you to create regular polygons and stars, then edit them into custom artistic shapes with dazzling flexibility and control. The Text tool now features vertical text layout options and new anti-alias rendering choices that render cleaner text at smaller font sizes, while options on the Pen tool have been simplified, making it easier than ever to add lines and curves to graphics.

History palette and Selective Undo - you can easily stay on top of complex editing projects with the new History palette, which tracks each command applied to an image. Powerful new Selective Undo functionality allows you to undo any individual editing step in a document’s history without undoing all the following commands. Select and save history steps to the clipboard or as scripts for use in another image.

Resource categorization - you can now organize your Paint Shop Pro resource files by projects or subjects in flexible Resource Categories. Choose exactly which groups of resources are available to use by switching between categories when using a tool or feature. You can create your own categories to use along with the default options installed with the program.

Filters and effects - use the Displacement Map filter to "tattoo" graphics onto a photo or create custom two- or three-dimensional surface effects. Add spin, twist and zoom blur effects to images with the Radial Blur filter.

Print Layout text - we’ve made it easier than ever to add captions and titles to photo layouts with the new text options in Print Layout. Add and format custom text to describe photos and graphics.

Browser information view - a new information section in the Browser allows you to view image details, creator information and EXIF data for any selected image. Sort images using EXIF data to find specific photos.

For more information about these features and the product in general, please be sure to read the Help file included with the program. If you still have questions, we encourage you to ask questions in this forum and we will do our best to provide an answer. Due to the number of posts, we may not be able to provide an immediate answer. The majority of staff will be monitoring this forum during business hours (9am to 5pm), U.S. Central time, though some may stop in earlier or (much) later.

IMPORTANT: as with any pre-release beta software, you may experience problems or issues that prevent you from using the program in a normal manner or that cause you to lose image data. If you are uncomfortable using pre-release software for any reason, we encourage you to wait for the final product to be released. If you do encounter an issue, please post as many details as you can provide, including steps to reproduce the issue and your system information. Our Quality Assurance staff may contact you for more information if need be. A list of known issues will be posted here in the forum with each new beta build of the software.

If you have suggestions for new features or enhancements to features in Paint Shop Pro 9, feel free to post those as well and we'll be glad to consider them for future versions of the program.

Again, on behalf of the entire Paint Shop Pro product team, welcome to the beta preview of Paint Shop Pro 9 - we're glad you're here.

Very sincerely,
ElShaddai Edwards "

Big fan here of PSP.

I've been reading the posts in the PSP 9 beta newsgroup. While there are, of course, some bugs, it looks waaaaaaaaay cool.

New painting tools, some of which are similar to Corel Painter, support for camera raw files, noise reduction tool, undo for something you did 10 steps back without losing what you did after, more..........

I don't see any mention of 16 bit color support??? Any added flexibility in color management? That's what PSP needs to compete with Photoshop...

Gotta have to you guys, you product is getting better and better all the time. Photoshop is still my choice for a bitmap editing app. but for the majority of users out there this is excellent!

Been a PSP user for over 2 years. Now on v. 8.1. I am trying out the beta of 9. Overall, very impressive. Only noticable negative is that is runs slower on my work computer. I will test it on home computer next week. If they can get the speed up it is a no-brainer upgrade for me.

Agreed. PSP9 does not have support for 16-bit editing. That's the only downside to this next release. Of all the comments that they have ignored, that's the biggest omission.

Other than that, the list of features looks very robust. Go get 'em Jasc!

I haven't yet found comments about color space, but my guess is that, again, it will be limited to sRGB.

Better get your Bibble 4 out soon, else there would be no reason for non-batch user to get go your route!

Or does PSP9 support batch processing of RAW?

16 bit colour support? I have been struggling as to decide if 16 bit (12 bit in my case D70 NEF) really making any visible difference. I am starting to think not but would appreciate other people's views.

I like psp9, it openigs my NEF files and trying to learn it. I have ordered psp8 which now has a free upgrade bundle of psp9.
Regards,
David

James,

Oh it, will be out soon 8) And there will be many compelling reasons to use it over other solutions.

Bibbes main focus is on integrated workflow and speed. And while you can get excellent quality using the built in raw support of PSP 9, You don't have the same flexibility you would have using Bibble 4.0.

Since Bibble's is primarily designed for working with raw there are many wayts to better integrate features and tools that plain and simply can't be done in an app that isn't designed specifically for them.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding is will be on the table very soon 8)

All that said, we are very glad PSP 9 has raw support, and hope it does very well for them and their users. Raw is still the best way to get th most from your Digital Camera, and the more people who shoot raw, the more people who will eventually need the power that Bibble 4 will offer.

Hey Eric,

Great, hope to see 4 soon.

If Bibble would just do vignetting correction, complex correction, i.e. light fall-off correction across the entire frame, specific to each lens (and each zoom setting for zoom lenses), that would be a BIG reason to buy Bibble.

Now the theory is fairly simple, and the processing time should not be a big deal, but getting the light fall-off pattern data for each lens will be massive. However some of us are willing to help. Especially those of us who have time and a huge collection of Nikkor glasses.

Does the pattern hold for each specific lens across all samples? Or close?

Hi James,

Lens correction in general is one of the things we had hoped to add for 4.0, but wound up falling of the schedule. The plan is to add things like that once 4.0 has shipped.

As someone, who's just ordered the PSP 8 I have to ask : When will this wonder be available ? Should I cancel my order and wait for v9 ? (and would the beta be solid enough to use in the meantime ?)

regards
Ole

If you've ordered 8, you get 9 for free. Meanwhile, you can do an awful lot with v8. The learning curve for PSP is steeper now, so spend your time learning the product. When 9 is released, you'll hit the ground running.

Go Jasc!

sounds like good advice, but where did you see the free upgrade ?

Just a quick note. I downloaded it on my home computer (Athlon XP 2600 w/1 GB of RAM). The whole download/install process was at warp compared to my work computer (P4 1.4, 512 MB). It runs many, many times faster. Since I would primarily use it at home anyway I am completely satisfied with it so far. Have to try my Minolta RAW files next. Also, will do the same picture with PSP 8 to compare against PSP 9.

It's on the Jasc home page:
http://www.jasc.com/

I concur that you should start with 8 now. It will be a while before 9 is released as a final version.

Also, Jasc has a user forum that's very helpful for each of their products, as well as one for the beta 9.

I pre-ordered it as an upgrade to v8 that I have for delivery in September. Cost me $49 for the upgrade with free shipping

I tried PSP 9 beta and it will not open my tif files as created either by BreezeBrowser or Canon's DPP. It does open jpg but not tif. I am sure this bug will be fixed.

I have been using PSP for years and find it user friendly. I have had no problems with previous versions and use 8.1 at present. I have 3 Canon cameras, 1D MK2, 10D and an S50. BreezeBrowser batch converts them all as opposed to Canon's DPP which does not do the S50 raw files.
Hope they get the bugs out and I will certainly buy it then.

Fred,

I have found that psp9 will open tif if they are compressed using LZW but not ZIP. It would be good to have it able to open both.
