Any 300D owners in the Philippines out there?

Hi Caterpillar,

WOW!!! 11T photos in barely 3 months?

At a file size of 3.1 MB (Large, fine), that would take roughly 34++ GB in storage space. That also means that you're shooting at an average of at least two hours a day (11,000 photos/90 days = 122 shots per day. I assume that it will take you about a minute to compose each shot).

I'm sure you are burning your images into CDs, otherwise you would have to install multiple hard disks in your computer.

That many photos in so short a time suggests you do this stuff for a living. Where on earth can one have so much fun and get paid for it?

Anyway, when you get commissioned to do a wedding, please email me ([email protected]). I'll tag along as your amateur assistant and shoot backup photos. I'll be free of charge, of course. I'll be there to learn, not to earn.

Cheers,

Liquidstone
liquidstone,

You are very lucky to get one. It does get sold very fast. My
vendor even wants to know if I want to sell my almost 3 month old
one as they have many orders for it.

I have shot about 11,000 frames with mine, mostly sports. I have
managed to work around most of the limitations (and some of them
are not problems or limitations at all). The flash needs to FEC
adjustments with mine, so with focus or AI servo switching in
Creative modes. I have used this thing to track moving objects and
it switches just when I want it to and it does not switch if I
don't want it to (such as focusing on a target and recomposing).

The only limitation I cannot overcome is the 4 frame buffer
limitation. Last night, I could hit 24 frames, but I have to
compromise quality a bit. I had to go to Large-medium compression
if I were to semi-break this limitation. This is one area where the
D70 beats it hands down. But the lens system of Canon seems better
in terms of depth or variety. One can get an IS lens for
P24,000-27,000 which I doubt you can with the Nikon system.

As for your club, well there is the photos.ph, but it has been down
for some time. It isn't exactly a club, but Pinoys hang around
there. Lots to learn from the shots they take.

If you want to shoot soccer, and sports knock on my door and maybe
we can go together. UAAP Track & Field is over thoughn (shot for 3
days straight), so we may have to opt for other sports and actions.
In any case, summer is almost here (and elections) and there are
lots of opportunities to shoot there.

I planned to shoot weddings and other events but hardly anybody
gets married in Feb! My scheduled wedding shoot is still in April.

If there are some events here in QC I'll post some (like there was
a dog show here 2 weeks ago), if you like those kind of shoots. I
am here in Diliman. I am shooting different kinds so that I will
learn the problems and issues with each one of them, that is why I
am not picky at this time (except if I am busy or have previous
appointments). It's also a good way of building your stock photos,
if not your portfolio.

Hi, Bobby,

It's nice to know that a pro like you is using the 300D. It gives me, a rank amateur, a feeling that I indeed bought the right equipment.

Excellent photos. My skills are still lightyears away from being able to take those shots, but I'm working hard on it and I'm having so much fun in the
process.

Keep shooting!

Liquidstone
Anybody out there who cares to network and possibly organize a
local 300D club? We can have the opportunity to organize not only
photo activities, but also a group that can speak as one as regards
issues like warranties, technical support, etc.
Liquidstone,

From Iligan in Mindanao. I'm just as happy as you are. In fact, I'm
using it for work. Did 2 calendar shoots with it, a billboard and
some product shoots.

Here's my latest shoot with it ...

http://www.pbase.com/timonera/kalilangan

Actually, I have a little problem with my unit. But Canon Phils.
was accommodating enough to lend me a service unit while mine was
being repaired coz of its err99 messages. I was told my unit has
been repaired, hope the err99 msg won't show up anymore. The
service unit is perfect, no errors after a few thousand images.

BTW, there are some 300D users in phphoto @ yahoogroups.

Hi, Mikee,

I'm still exploring the performance envelope of my 300D. I'll post sample photos as soon as I can.

Regards,

Liquidstone
Nice to see some fellow Filipinos on the board. I was born there,
although I moved to the states when I was 5. Unfortunately my fear
of heights has prevented me from going back to visit. Please
notify me of any photos you take there. I'd love to see them.
Thanks.

Hi Caterpillar,

WOW!!! 11T photos in barely 3 months?

At a file size of 3.1 MB (Large, fine), that would take roughly
34++ GB in storage space.
At ISO 100, you get around 2mb, sometimes less.
That also means that you're shooting at
an average of at least two hours a day (11,000 photos/90 days = 122
shots per day. I assume that it will take you about a minute to
compose each shot).
Not all shots are "thought of" or composed in one min. Many are sports shots and that requires a fast hand (both left and right), quick eye and shutter finger. Some of the shots are equipment test shots where the goal is not to see an output but to test the lens, or camera. For example, I used 1,000 + shots to test shooting the comera in continuous mode Large-Normal. I wanted to find out the lag and the best way to apportion the shots in continuous mode using these settings.
I'm sure you are burning your images into CDs, otherwise you would
have to install multiple hard disks in your computer.
Yes, I am and I am waiting for DVD-R + - drive prices to go down below P6K.
That many photos in so short a time suggests you do this stuff for
a living. Where on earth can one have so much fun and get paid for
it?
No. I do it for fun. The reason for taking so many is to learn as quickly as possible. But to learn means not just to learn about the subject, but the equipment, and the conditions you expect it to peform. I am "earning" a bit here and there from the shots when the people I shoot request a copy.
Anyway, when you get commissioned to do a wedding, please email me
([email protected]). I'll tag along as your amateur assistant
and shoot backup photos. I'll be free of charge, of course. I'll be
there to learn, not to earn.
My official gig is still Dec 4 wherebouts. My friend who is getting married this April I will do but as a 2nd photographer. They hired a "pro." I already know how to do weddings (been doing it way back 20 yrs ago with about 3 dozen under my belt), but I plan to give this one as a gift and then create my own portfolio, hoping this will generate referals (that's how I got to do dozens in the past unintentionally of course). It will be a tough shoot this April wedding because the place is notoriously dim in lighting and I like to shoot without flash. Will keep you in mind when other event happens as you being there will be too much of people shooting. I am waiting for feedback in churches in Bulacan/Malolos, you can tag along there.

Oh, I belong to the "available light" club. What I mean is that if I can, I try to avoid using flash. I am willing to shoot as low as 1/4-1/8 sec just to avoid the flash. If you tag along, you may have to shoot without one. Might as well practice low light shooting (another reason why I reached 11,000 shots in 3 months). ;-)

Iam Loki,

I consider Bobby T. to be my favorite photographer. I like his style. I am learning a lot from him. I am glad he got a 300D because even with a p&s he was doing a great job. Imagine now what he can do with his 300D! And he got a 24-70L which I am seriously thinking as well, except it is so darn expensive.

He is also very versatile. He can shoot many types of events and do well. I guess his fundamentals is good, that is why. He has a good eye, and looking at the pictures, he has good raport with his subjects. And yet he can be inconspicuous if he wants to. HIs being a pj is good as it gives him opportunities to take pictures and earn something from it too.

BTW, I haven't met the man, me being from Luzon. But his pictures say a lot about him.
As an American born Flip, I really enjoy seeing pictures of other
places in the PI. I've only been to Manila and Clark Airbase, so
your pictures are quite an eye opener of what was burned into my
memory. Thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures.

well, for a while, i got so insecure with my 300D coz, looking back, i thought i did better with the P&S digicams, like my oly c3000z (that i got for $175 on ebay) and my ex-minolta 7Hi. only now after shooting that kalilangan festival in gensan that i felt the advantages of a DSLR. but still, the P&S has lotsa advantages, too. i'd try saving for the digital Pro IS, or any of those new crop of 8MP digicams. it takes little effort to take good shots with compacts, and you can more easily choose unusual angles with them, thanks to the LCD preview.

i heard that with the devaluation of the peso, it's now something in the P82K range. lucky me got it for P40k! but that meant almost not spending on christmas. :-)

No need to. Didn't mean to put you on the spot. Just saying what I think. You deserve the kudos anyway. :-)

I understand what you mean. I feel the same about my dc-4800. But image quality and freedom from noise, slow AF has made me move into the dslr. My plan was this year, Oct-Dec, or early 2005, but the sub-U$1,000 300d was too tempting. In fact, when it frist came out it can be had for about P54k. The 2nd batch went for P55.5-56k, now they go for P58-59K. No more discounts!

I only need that 24-70L for weddings. But that will be a while because I am still trying to do a job for my first dslr wedding. Maybe April. Or sooner if I can get one this March.

True, true.

And this is why I don't like the white lens. I understand why it is white for sports (less heat buildup in outside sports shoots), but for other uses, it is like a loudspeaker attracting too much attention.

I don't use the gb-1 grip. Battery has been good with the 300D and I always carry a spare. If I don't use IS and the AF is not going to hunt a lot, I have gotten over 550 shots most of the time per charge. Last one I did I got 1,100 shots with the Canon battery! But I presume, you got that grip for a different reason. You are correct in that the grip does round up the camera as it is a tad small and your small fingers do need something to hold on to.

As for the flash, well, you may have to get that sigma 500 dg super something as it is cheaper and offers the same features and more. I am thinking of that for the next purchase rather than a lens. You are going to love that AF assist of these flashes for your pj work, I am sure.

glad there's quite a handful of Filipino photographers (300D photographers for that matter haha) here...did anyone attended the photoworld manila seminar?!

anyway, getting a 300D here is indeed very tough...i guess i'm one of the lucky ones who got a 300D with 1 phone call and got 1 in a day or two :D

but hey...anyone want a 300D unit? i'm actually selling mine already...i'm looking to upgrade on a 10D or an EOS 3 for that matter...and of course, buy me some L lenses! :D

Its good to know my fellow kababayans are in this forum. I thought I'd share some photos with you all when I was there early January in Laoag City, Fort Ilocandia Resort. I had to resize them so they'll load up fast in this forum since the original shots are 3mb in size. I love this camera. Comments welcome

Ditto... Nice ones kabayan.

I can't wait to take my 300D back to P.I. I am still saving up to buy some more lens in addtion to the kit lens, 80-200mm 4.5-5.6 and 50mm 1.8 II. I am hoping to get an "L" glass someday :)

I am based here in California and been planning to go back for vacation this year for New Years.

Again, nice to hear from fellow Filipino geared with 300D :)

I went there today, the last day. Lots of people. I heard it was a mob last Sat and Sunday. So, today was light (w/c was still lots of people).

I was able to buy some stuff due to the cut down prices. Got some 8x10 and 11x14 frames cheap. Also got me a 58mm Cokin rubber lens hood (for P240). And my planned Mnafrotto monopod (676B) and a Manfrotto 484 ballhead. Nice monopod -- short for a 3 section thing, black but well built. The ballhead is nice sturdy and good for a 4 kilo load.

But the capper that made me and my friend's day is the treat we got from Canon Phil. I registered my 300D (they got my name and serial no) and they gave me a complete Canon poster of its cameras from the beginning up to the 1D mkII. I also got a hard bound book titled " EF Lens Work III: The Eyes of EOS." A nice book about the EOS lenses.

The icing on this cake is that we were able to play with the new 70-300mm DO IS lens AND the new 28-300mm IS L lens! Boy was that 28-300 heavy! But sweet! Plugged it to my 300D and shot some pics of it.

And the coup de resistance! -- we were able to play with the 1D mkII!!!! Shooting at 8.5 fps is unbelievable! And the AF is fast, fast, fast! It made my 300D look like a turtle! It was also well balanced with the 70-300 DO IS lens. Screen was bright, but the flaw I saw was the preview LCD -- the color was wrong, very off. But I guess because it was a pre-release version. They would not let me use my own CF. But I could shoot with it and tinker with it. I am sure the final release version would not have that oversight.

Hello Caterpillar. Good for you to test some of Canon's newer lenses. I'm eyeing for that 28-300mm IS L lens. It'll be out here in US on April and cost around $2499. Yikes!...not that cheap but I'm saving for it coz I like its technology and sure to be my all around lens for its wide angle and telephoto range. Just love those L lenses. Camera shake(handheld) and changing lens was one thing I hate most with my photoshoots so this lens is my problem solver. Anyhow thanks for sharing your insights.

Hello out there!

Glad to see that there are a number of 300D users in this forum that are in the Philippines. Had mine for about 3 months now. Been shooting more than I can count--using it professionally in the magazine I work with. You guys just don't have an Idea how much I love the 300D. I started out with a Minolta 35mm SLR for use in my course in college. Right then and there, I fell in love with photogrpahy. My interest grew and I started to use the Mamiya 645, RB 67 & RZ 67. Even tried out some Blads. I really wanted to get into photography because I LOVE takin pictures. The big problem was it was so d a m n expensive--esp the medium format cameras that you needed in order to get into advertising and editorial photography so I chilled for a while until I had my first digital camera (A sony 2mp or 4 mp cybershot) Back then Digital photography was not that respected yet--circa 1998 and I chilled again. Started again when my friend sold me his CP 5000 which was, in a way semi-professional with its 5mp and full manual controls. BUT as good as it was, I knew from experience that a DSLR was the way to go. ENTER the 300D. When I first heard about it, I clearly knew this was the camera for me and fell in love with it.

So if anyone wants to start a 300D club here in the Philippines--count me in.

Sorry for the long reply--really love my 300D

Oh, I belong to the "available light" club. What I mean is that if
I can, I try to avoid using flash. I am willing to shoot as low as
1/4-1/8 sec just to avoid the flash. If you tag along, you may
have to shoot without one. Might as well practice low light
shooting (another reason why I reached 11,000 shots in 3 months).
;-)
Hi Caterpillar,

Touche!!! I'm also a devout believer in using only available light. In fact, this is what pushed me to go DSLR - I can use ISO 1600 with acceptable noise levels. My Casio QV5700 has more noise at ISO 100 than the 300D at ISO 1600.

My only regret for now is my lenses (EFS 18-55, f3.5-5.6 and EF 55-200, f4.5-5.6) are relatively slow. I hope the construction industry (where I get my bread and butter) gets better soon so I can afford the faster, stabilized zooms, possibly even the L lenses.

Interestingly, I am color-blind. Most of my porfolio are in black & white, or monotone. I shoot however in color, then post-process my photos in Photoshop or Photopaint. In my opinion, available light photos produce more stunning B/Ws than those taken with artificial light.

Keep snapping,

Liquidstone

saw you bought a manfrotto tripod...boutght one for myself as well...i got the 055 (3021 in the US) PRO and a 486 RC2 ballhead...surprisingly, it's cheaper to buy here than the US....one of the few lucky instances we Filipino have hahaha

i got hold of the 1D mk2 and the new L and DO lenses as well...they are so darn heavy! i'm eyeing the 70-200 2.8L though...just don't see how a 10x zoom will equal the normal 3x zoom in terms of optical quality...no matter if its an L lens...

anyway, hope to talk to you guys again in this forum...and i hope to shoot with you guys in the near future!

ballhead...surprisingly, it's cheaper to buy here than the
US....one of the few lucky instances we Filipino have hahaha
True. Every now and then we do get the breaks. Anyway, I just needed a good steady monopod. I have been shooting sports/action lately and I need a good one. I have postponed getting it as my friend told me that the Photoworld event have lots of big discounts.
i got hold of the 1D mk2 and the new L and DO lenses as well...they
are so darn heavy! i'm eyeing the 70-200 2.8L though...just don't
see how a 10x zoom will equal the normal 3x zoom in terms of
optical quality...no matter if its an L lens...
True again. But that 70-200 2.8 L is also goint be big and heavy. The 28-300 IS is for PJs and those who want a good all around lens without sacrificing quality (though most likely will not be on par with 3x zooms). I just wonder who will have about P400,000 for that lens!
anyway, hope to talk to you guys again in this forum...and i hope
to shoot with you guys in the near future!
Yes. Looking forward to that.

I think that 28-300 IS is all right. It will not be as sharp as the other L lens due to the 11x magnification, but it will be above board. And it seems you can afford it. I believe it will be very expensive than U$2,499. Isn't that the price for the 70-300 IS DO? I thought the 28-300 IS is in the 3K-4k range. In any case, I think the price will be lower than these MSRP by around 40% avg.

Yes, I too do not like changing lenses in the middle of a shoot. I must do so at times. The other solution is to have 2 bodies. For pro work, it's a must have anyway (though I am not a pro).
The icing on this cake is that we were able to play with the new
70-300mm DO IS lens AND the new 28-300mm IS L lens! Boy was that
28-300 heavy! But sweet! Plugged it to my 300D and shot some pics
of it.
Hello Caterpillar. Good for you to test some of Canon's newer
lenses. I'm eyeing for that 28-300mm IS L lens. It'll be out here
in US on April and cost around $2499. Yikes!...not that cheap but
I'm saving for it coz I like its technology and sure to be my all
around lens for its wide angle and telephoto range. Just love those
L lenses. Camera shake(handheld) and changing lens was one thing I
hate most with my photoshoots so this lens is my problem solver.
Anyhow thanks for sharing your insights.
