Ricoh Expands Internet-Connectivity Horizons with
3.34-Megapixel RDC-i500 Image Capturing Device

TOKYO, March 21, 2001—Ricoh Company, Ltd., today announced the launch of the RDC-i500. The new model, a personal-use version of the RDC-i700 -- a flagship model that Time magazine selected as Invention of the Year 2000 for its ability to capture, edit, and distribute images and text over the Internet -- offers excellent value. Like its professional cousin, the RDC-i500 boasts image capturing, data management, and networking capabilities that help users create image-based documents very efficiently for presentations, sharing through email, or uploading directly to websites

The RDC-i500 embodies Ricoh’s Image Communication concept of providing image processing equipment and systems that make communicating information more efficient than ever before. The RDC-i500 builds on that concept by adding value in the form of powerful, yet user-friendly, Internet capabilities. An excellent example is Quick Send, which lets users e-mail an image to preset addresses just by pressing a few buttons.

Main Features

Image Capturing

The RDC-i500 delivers top performance with a 3.34-megapixel CCD and a 3X optical zoom. The result is photo-quality resolution of up to 2048 x 1536 pixels. The 3x optical zoom lens is equivalent to 35–105mm on a 35mm film camera, offering flexibility for most shooting situations and maintaining full crispness across the zoom range.

The RDC-i500 lets you get as close as about 1cm (0.4 inch) from a subject without losing the definition you enjoy at normal shooting distances.

Ricoh’s document technology lets you crisply capture text in black and white. WAV-format voice memos and an AVI movie capturing capability add realism and impact. You can annotate stills with sound or use the Voice Memo feature to record thoughts on the run.

A split-screen shooting mode lets you capture two images for showing simultaneously, either on the top and bottom or left and right. This is very handy for presentations when you need to make it easier to understand product details.

The 2.0-inch LCD screen swivels to let you take shots accurately from the most challenging angles. The 200,000 pixel, active matrix screen provides the accuracy and detail you need to check shot quality or review results.

Networking

You can e-mail stills, movies, text, and voice memos. Simplify e-mailing by setting up your dial-up account, address book, and preset memos on your PC. Quick Send makes light work of sending a file to your company while on the road or other addresses you commonly transmit to. You can send a still to a preregistered address just by pressing a few buttons. You can also input addresses and messages directly on the RDC-i500. You may send your high-resolution images, or to facilitate faster transfer, have the camera automatically create a lower resolution copy that is better suited for e-mail and photo sharing.

The JOB Navi. HTML file creation function lets you select multiple images and post them directly to your web site. Customizable templates control the links with selected files and thumbnail creation automatically. FTP uploading is perfect for updating websites quickly and directly, wherever you are.

Install dial-up server software on a modem-equipped PC and transfer data directly to receiver’s computer. Data security assured due to no server interference.

Data Management

The RDC-i500 Software CD includes an application for JOB Navi. Function that lets you build an Image Capture Guide List on a Windows PC. Simply follow the list when taking shots and transfer images to the PC, where they link automatically with the source file. This is perfect for creating a database or product list.

JOB Navi. function is also useful for quickly autogenerating an HTML file. Just select captured images, slot them into an HTML template, and upload to the Internet.

A folder management facility helps organize image files for easy access. You can store each new image in a specified folder. You can add folders based on the standard DCF format.

To improve productivity, you can link the RDC-i500 to a PC via a LAN or USB connection. Open the PC’s web browser to handle images and even copy them to the hard disk. You can use the browser to modify communications settings and input preset memos. The software pack includes the Explorer plug-in for Windows and a Mac application called RDC-i Mounter. Installed on a PC, you can operate the RDC-i500 like an external disc drive.

Accessories

The RDC-i500 ships with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, battery charger, lens cap, soft case, wrist strap, USB cable, and AV cable. An AC adapter, remote control, lithium-ion battery, and battery charger are optionally available. The kit also includes a software CD, which contains Image Capture Guide List templates and a USB driver.

Ricoh’s Image Capturing Device Concept

The thinking behind Ricoh’s Image Capturing Device concept is that it should be easy not just to record digital images but also to edit and distribute them over LANs or the Internet. At Ricoh, digital cameras based on this concept are key productivity tools that reflect the Company’s consistent emphasis on Image Communication throughout its office equipment range.

The RDC-i500 reflects the expertise that Ricoh has accumulated in digital imaging technologies and market needs since 1996, when it launched the RDC-1 multimedia digital camera. With its many advanced networking capabilities, the RDC-i500 is equally suited to both consumers and businesspeople.

TOKYO, March 21, 2001—Ricoh Company, Ltd., today announced
the launch of the RDC-i500.
I like the ISO-800, metering patterns & CF slot. Don't care about internet ready.

What's with the RDC-7s? No English page. What is improved over the RDC-7?

This camera was released in Japan aorund November, 2000. Most specs are the same as RDC-7's but additional points are:

Light silver body colour.
2 picture composition taken separately but on 1 frame.
Croping function 640x480/1024x766 pixels out of 2048x1536 image.
Negative film effect shooting.
Manual white balance.
Sound can be added after shooting image

Also, RDC-i500 handling compared to the RDC-7 is much improved with a two step shutter release ( pre focus / shoot)

Thanks Rose. I don't care about any of that. I still have my RDC-2 in the house and loved the low light shooting with it. The RDC-i500 should be good too w/ISO-800.

AARRRGGHHH !! I don't want to wait that long.
:

I realize we feels it is our right to obtain the latest Japan toy the minute it is released, but life doesn't work that way!

If patience is not your virtue, then you should consider its big brother the RDC-i700 with Internet browsing via its touch screen LCD monitor.
The site below will take you there:

Also, from an end user's point of view you can join John Scholefield as he journeys across the Southern USA by bicycle armed with his RDC-i700, pet name Rover:

For the past two months, I've had the pleasure of test driving an RDC-i700 and it is an impressive piece of hardware. I'm familiar with John's travels and have been following his report (I've updated his URL to point directly to his travel updates).

The i700 is alot bigger and HEAVIER than thei i500 (hwich is farly close to the RDC-7). No ISO 800 either as I recall. Closer to the RDC-2 then RDC-7.

Don

The i700 is alot bigger and HEAVIER than thei i500 ...[c]loser to
the RDC-2 then RDC-7.
The i700 IS larger and weighs 450g to the i500/RDC-7's 270 g. But the point is that it is targeted at a different customer and has more features (data terminal functiion, multiple slots) than the other cameras. More importantly, it is available NOW while the i500 has yet to come to market.

Actually not so available, I just did a best price search and got NO results for the i700. (The RDC-7 as low as $598)

I just did a search on ricoh rdc (price search) and the RDC7 and
6000 are the latest Ricohs offered for sale.

Anyway, it's the i500 not the i700 that is of interest,
Hmmm, where did you perform a price search? The RDC-i700 has been on sale at http://www.ricohzone.com since May 1 at $1299. The RDC-i500 reportedly goes on sale in the US in mid-July.
