290$ flat rate for 10D labor!!!

$290 is high, do they have Harvard lawyers fixing cameras over there?
LOL, that is really funny, exactly what I had in mind. I tried to figure if they spend more than 20 minutes fixing my camera, that would make them get around 850$ per hour. that is better than Harvard Lawyars. and why should I be happy that they clean and adjust it? last time when I send the 10D in they did dirty it and messed up the focus. fixed it when I send it again. but on top of that- my camera is under warranty- even with the damage- why should I be happy to pay for cleaning?

told the guy: OK, I will pay the 485$, but can you make sure that the new LCD won't have any dead pixels? so he replied: no need to make such a note. canon would not distribute a camera with dead pixels on the LCD. thought you might find it funny as I did. (in the first shift of 10D's to the store I decided to wait since all had dead pixels on the LCD, exept to 2 that had pleanty of hot pixels on the sensor...

There are repair manuals online and the LCD wire harness just unplugs. All you have to do is unscrew the screws holding it in place, unplug the wiring harness, and plug the new one in.

If you broke the cover it’s super easy to replace and costs under $30.00.

If that had been my house the burgler would have been the one with the bad luck. Crooks would have no trouble getting into my home when I am home. They would leave feet first though in a body bag. Can you say hollow point.
in fact I did not do it because of the
10D, but because on Saturday night I had to struggle a burglar to
prevent him from entering my apartment t from the fire exit . the
guy tried to enter although he saw me and my wife inside..... as
you can see I have bad lack recently. anyway, with 3 Leica cameras
and 7 Leica lenses in my apartment I would have given him my 10D
for his son's birthday without further hesitations. ; > )

no, the Leica is much better for that purpose.... (used my silver M7 with summilux asph silver.... I actually had it in my hand at the moment, but I decided simply to close the window that he was trying to open) the funniest thing was that I was scarred to death, but when he started to run away I instinctively stried to run after him...

that is a great idea. however it was the LCD, not the cover. (you seem to be saying that I could have done also that. this is very interesting. too late now but I really like the idea)

Hei, don't underestimate my deeds, I did kick the guy out of my apartment. I didn't wish for much contact with him (it was all so very fast) because I assume that someone that enters an apartment when he knows that people are there is likely to be armed.

Too much money. I have way over $10,000 of gear covered for about
$50. Now this all does depend on you home owners policy. If you
have low coverage to begin with, I can see them whacking you on
this.
Mine is a separate policy from our homeowners--State Farm. It is in the range of $200--can't remember exactly. This covers $10,000 + (not sure now exactly as I add and subtract items and they adjust it) and I'm covered for my parttime commercial photography. Had it been fulltime, it would be much more.

I just checked my rider. I pay $75.00 for $4500.00 worth of coverage. My mistake.
I broke my LCD on my 10D. I realized it would be expensive to fix
it and that it would not be covered by warranty. send it to repair.
part is 150$, labor 290$ (tax...) total is 490$!!! sounds really
lots of money to me, and pain to pay on a digital camera that you
can get for about twice of that. I did it anyway.
the representative told me that 290$ for labor is a FLAT RATE for
any 10D repair not under warranty. So do take good care of you
cameras.
btw, two years ago (in my pre-mac period) I got a new sony laptop
and my LCD broke in an accident. Sony fixed it without charging me
(although it was not covered by warranty). and other experiences
with my Leica cameras were always simillar.

Click on "service" - then select the closest province.

We don't have Canon owned repair facilities here - but we do have a lot of authorised repair providers. They do warranty and nonwarranty work. I'm not certain if the cost is less than in the States, but I am certain the TAT is a lot less. (I inquired relative to getting a full camera cleaning - and was told I could drop the camera off on a Monday AM and get it back the next afternoon. Cost was quoted as $80 + GST/PST.) 'Might be worth the price of the phonecall - or the time of an email - to find out if a Canadian repair provider is viable for your needs.

That labor charge is about right judging from what I've seen so far. Sony charged so much that it turned out to be cheaper to buy a new unit, and Olympus charged a flat $390 plus parts. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the flat repair rate was about what the manufacturer charged the retailer for a new unit.

Chuck Westfall quoted a price of $185 as the base price to replace a shutter last July. http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php? So I guess either there has been a price rise or we are missing part of the story. It may be the latter. He also quoted a $290 price. But it was for the case where more needed repair than just the shutter. It may be that Canon expects that more than just the lcd will need work and this price is to bring a damaged camera up to spec. I hope its not just a price rise.

No, the indicated that only the LCD needs to be replaced, and if more has to be done I will have to pay more! and a guy that did not have a clue about my camera, which I spoke with prior to reaching the right department specified that 290$ IS the flat rate for the 10D, sorry to disappoint.

I wonder if i should strive to be a digital camera repair person... surely it makes a better income than being a photographer!

(I'm just a hobbyist.)

I think there is some confusion in the conversation. I think the point is that the LCD is the only damaged component where a priced part needs replacement. But your $290 pays for a standard set of service procedures. Those procedures are intended to bring a camera that has been subject to some abuse back into spec. They have a more limited set of procedures that only cost $185 that are adequate where there is no issue of physical shock to the camera.

Yes you do ! In Missassaga(sp?) near the Toronto airport. GREAT folks, I was in Toronto and had impact damage to my 10D. They replaced the upper housing, checked and adjusted auto focus on the body and a 70-200 2.8L IS all for $100CDN and 15% tax.

The housing was used (new part was out of stock) and the counter person was drolling over my bag of L lens. They had me back in service in two days. GREAT JOB CANON !!!

I really was expecting a $500 repair bill (USD), but I got really lucky ! It was Holloween Eve and they were in a great mood and the tech cut me a deal to use the part he had off another camera.
