I have a nikon 995 time to go to dslr..There is the Canon D10, Nikon D100 the Fuji S2 Pro perhaps others...I normally would not wait to buy...but I feel that the D100 and the S2 pro have been around way too long and any day we should see the new models. Perhaps this thread is too soon because we can't compare what we don't have...any thinkers out there that can give me some input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi Allen,

When to jump on the round-a-bout? Good question.

If you buy what is already on the market and proven you buy slightly older technology. That does not meean it is bad and you probably get a better deal.

If you wait for the next great release you run the risk of buying a product that may have flaws in it.

Most of the manufacturers 'rush' products to market and have us, the users do their beta testing and for that privalage we get to pay the highest possible price for the product. Been there, done that had the t-shirt!

Its a gamble and my guess is it comes down to your nerve! Mine is not so good anymore, so I tend to wait.

and you need to decide based on the lens system you already own (if you do). I am 'still' shooting with the D60 and added a D30 for backup this year to replace an aging E10 and to gain compatibility in lenses and lighting. No matter what you do, you will be buying a body that will be replaced 'relatively' soon, but if it suits you for now, then you can probably miss a generation or so and be fine. I chose not to upgrade to 10D and will probably choose something in the 1D family or if there is a mid range similar to what we Canonites refer to as a 3D--or maybe even an upgrade in the 10D family. What I have works very well for my work now--and I really only want increased resolution and some options that I don't have now.

Same or better quality than a D100 or 10D, smaller than ANY other DSLR and much better construction and features than a Digital Rebel.

It uses AA NiMH batteries which are available everywhere.

If I want my *istD to feel more like the size and weight of a 10D, I just have to slap on the battery grip.

I originally had a Nikon 990. Although I got gret photos from it, it's shutter lag drove me nuts. Plus, the time it took to power on made me lose many fleeting moments. Nikon desgned the D100 to have a quality they call "camera-ness", which means that when you pick it up, it works exactly like a normal SLR. The best part about this is that there is virtually no start up time. You flip the switch and the camera is on! You can even leave the camera on for a month--maybe even longer--and then pick it up one day and it will still work. One time, I was low on battery but I didn't have time to charge because I was taking photos of surfers in the middle of the beach. Well, to save as much battery as possible, instead of waiting for the auto shut off, I immediately turned off the camera after taking a shot. But as soon as I saw a photo moment, I turned on the camera and was able to capture everything I saw without any delay. It's amazing.

The AF is reliable too. I've never had any problem with AF, even in really low light levels. Here's a low light photo with my D100. the light was actually very low and it took a 15 sec exposure, yet, the D100 was able to lock on with the 24-85mm AF-S lens without any hesitation or hunting. Granted, it's not as good as the pro cameras such as the D1X or the Canon 1Ds.

As for durability, I've actually dropped my D100 on concrete steps from 4 ft high as I was washing my feet while leaving the beach. Although the shell is polycarbonate, the sub-frame is metal. It feels very solid, much more so than the N80 it is based on.

Color out of the D100 is great, as long as you get the correct white-balance. Here's some samples (by the ways, all of these samples are straight out-of-the-camera except for resize for web:

For cons, the only problems I have with it are that it's lowest ISO is 200, it's highest flash sync is 1/180, and it's buffer only accomodates a burst of 6 JPG's or 4 RAW images.

All the DSLR available are very good. Photo-quality wise, there is hardly any difference. Go and pick them up, hold them in your hand. Which one 'feels' the most natural?

If you have the money now, buy the camera, don't wait for the next big thing. Is weather sealing important? Get the E-1. Want to go light as possible. Check out Canon 100D and Pentax *ist D. Ruggedness and lightness? E-1. Do you have access to used Canon or Nikon lenses? 10D/S2/D100 will save you money in the long run.

But remember, you are buying a whole system. You might want to upgrade to a Pro model later. Or wide-angle shots. Or macro.
But nothing beats testing the camera in-hand.

Sorry, it was too tempting :-)

But seriously - it is quite a difficult choice. If u really need someting now - go for Canon 10D. But if u can hold for a while - look at Olympus E-1.
Do take into consideration the lenses that you need to buy (and carry around).

Get something that you are comfortable with. It is very easy to get trapped in the resolution/noise trap & loose the joy.

Thanks to all who have given me some of their thoughts. to fotogenetic...great pictures...really like the low light, nice baby too.

I am aware that i will be making an investment in lenses and i can always then update the body. Usually the decision is Canon or Nikon glass.

I know at the so called pro level of the D10 and nikons D100 they will take turns being better than the other at each new release (most likely) Some people tell me that Canon has become more photographer friendly with their support and that they feel that Canon has better technology...To me I have felt that Nikon was always the one to beat. I know that normally i would not wait for the latest greatest because that is usually short lived. But the Nikon D100 has been around too long and I suspect that since they are now making their own sensors we could be in for a leap ahead for Nikon....I have heard many people switch from nikon to canon. Maybe by the time this thread is over we will have news about new cameras...Thank you all..... you help make dpreview a great site and you certainly help me.

I guess it has been said many times before: buy the system, not just the camera. I was using the Nikon system for film, but when i switched to digital I went with the Canon 300D. First of all because Nikon didn't offer anything in that price range. Secondly because all I talked to seem to say that Canon is leading big right now. Now that I have learned more about things outside the Nikon world, I seem to see it is true. The Canon system of lenses and bodies, especially digital bodies, seems a year or two ahead of Nikon, maybe more. I think Nikon used to be #1 for a long time. But now I think they have fallen behind. Maybe they got overconfident? Maybe they underestimated Canon? Maybe it is because Canon has so much money that they can outspend Nikon in technology developments? I don't know. But it seems that Canon offers more options, better options, at better prices. I think Canon is very hard to compete with right now. If you are patient, Nikon eventually offers similar equipment. But Canon doesn't stay still. So I think in the long run I am better off on this train. Technology is a relentless juggarnaut. Things move much faster now. If you don't lead, you fall behind. Very different from the days of film cameras.

Thanks I persoally was feeling the same way...re that Canon seems to be ahead in the technology....but as this technology world goes right now the replacement for the nikon D100 could allow Nikon to take a leap forward. I know this may go back and fourth for many years and one cannot keep waiting for the latest greatest... It is just that at this particular time I felt the Nikon is way past due for their replacement so i was willing to wait......but then the Canon D10 will be due for its replacement .... I guess the bottom line is as you stated.... pick the system so that the accessories that are accumulated will work with the next body of the same brand.....I always had a certain feel about Nikon as superior to canon......and it seems that from many of the threads i read more people seem happier with their Nikon D100's than the Canon group with too many complaints about their D10 ( I know many also love their D10) just a feeling i got....thanks again everyone

I was trying to decide which of those three cameras to buy as well. Initially I was leaning towards the Nikon D100. That was really a throw back to my photo journalist days when 95% of the pros had Nikons. I had Canons! The trouble with having Canons when everyone else had Nikons is that you couldn't borrow gear like a 20 mm lens for a stock shot.

Anyway, after handling the D-100 and the 10-D and inspecting all the specs I went for the Canon 10-D. Arrives this week as nobody around here has it in stock. That is the other strange thing, you can get the D100 off the shelf but the 10-D is on back order everywhere. Perhaps that says something....

Must say I was a bit concerned regarding the focus issue (many discussions on the forum) but went with Canon anyway.

Lens choice is really confusing. That is your next issue.
