Does 1Ds have flash-assisted focussing?

I used to own a Canon D60. With the 420EX flash attached, in low lights, it would emit an IR beam as well as quick flashes to assist in focusing. I noticed the flash-assisted focussing is missing in the 1DS, and it appears that it significantly compromises the ability of the 1Ds to focus in the dark. Any thoughts?

Turn the camera to Single Shot AF. This is the only mode that the assisted focusing works in.

Took me a time or two to remember that one ...

Hi Mike,

My camera is set to single shot AF. I've never seen it emit a flash for focusing. Remember, I'm not talking about infra-red focusing.

Sincerely,
Lloyd

The 1D or 1DS do not have that built in white light if that is what you are asking about. IMHO not of much use anyway.

But your flash has an AF assist lamp which btw is not infrared but rather a visible red. It works much better then the white light and should allow you to focus in complete darkness.

IR is INVISIBLE TO THE HUMAN EYE. You can see the red light of the focus assist light on the 550EX and other Canon flashes. Also, my 550 never emits flashes to allow focus ... that's a 10D thing. It will focus IN THE DARK with the assist lights.

If the assist lights were IR ... the camera would misfocus many times when an IR light source - invisible to you - was under a focus sensor.

Within the range of the assist lamp which usually isn't very far.
