No just used the Menu option - in theory this should just reset the Custom and personal functions but on BOTH occasions it made this sharpness difference, the first time,I'd not set any functions up and even now I'd NEVER set the camera to sharpness +1 or +2 , it's always been in the middle

To which I reponded: "why you put BIOS flash on web?"

Also if you flash to this firmware, YOU CAN NOT FLASH BACK unless
you send the camera back to a Canon servie center!!

You are not supposed to use IS when the camera is on a tripod.
Canon says the IS will malfunction (at least on the consumer lenses

• don't know about "L"s).

You are right of course about some of the IS lenses supposed to be turned off or turning themselves off if they decide they are on a tripod. I just found it surprising that the subject would drift completely out of the view finder. I wouldn't have thought that the IS had that much movement in it.

The two mode IS used in the 100-400 seems to work just fine on the tripod while the single mode in the 28-135 doesn't. I did some fairly careful testing the other day and one thing that seemed apparent was that pictures were distinctly softer with IS on. No doubt one reason Canon says to turn it off when you can.

IS gets a lot of shots I would miss otherwise and makes it awful tempting to leave a tripod/monopod behind but in some respects my verdict is still out on it. I'd like to use a piece of fast IS glass awhile for testing.

Just installed firmware and am DEFINATLEY getting sharper images,
and I was not unhappy before firmware, double bonus.

I see people post this and think... They really don't understand metering on an SLR. The meter was NEVER designed not ato blow out highlights. P&S might meter that way, but not an SLR. They expose to set the metered area to 18% gray. If that causes highlights to blow out, then so be it. The matrix metering is designed to try and expose the subject to 18% grey taking into account different surrounding light (backlight/very dark background). But the fact remains highlights may have to be blown out to get the exposure correct on the subject.

If you do not want blown highlights, it is YOUR responsibility to control the contrast so it does not happen.

As for the sharpness part, I don't notice any obvious difference.
However, it's "plausible" that images might get sharper after a
firmware change. Canon might have changed the degree of in-camera
sharpening.

Not sure if it's great minds or just suspicious minds but I too am wondering if Canon just added a little default sharpening to the neutral setting and moved the entire curve a bit to reduce the soft focus complaints.

You have to run the exe and unpack it first, then copy all files to
card.

I know because I read down the thread about the highlights so I tried it out in full sun on some bright highlights -when I did that I set it to ISO 100. I was perplexed about the lowered number of images, turned the camera on and off, formatted the drive, still nothing. Then I saw the thing about clearing the settings and it instantly snapped up to 425. I can't think of anything I had in the settings that would cause that. And yesterday while out shooting I had plenty of images to go around (even at ISO 400).

Make sure that an actual copy of the file is on the flash card. Sometimes by just dragging the file all you do is create a shortcut.

Actually, I think that evaluative metering algorithms are often "tweaked" to give desired results. Perhaps for digital cameras with a tendency towards a bit of underexposure to preserve highlights.

The meter itself is still calibrated the same (to 13% gray, not 18%, BTW), but the evaluative algorithm could be tweaked via firmware.

I see people post this and think... They really don't understand
