A1II and A9III FW4.0 Released

Updated both A1ii (from 2.01) and A9iii (from 3) - no issues.

Weren't the issues with firmware updates with the original A1's? Don't recall reading about any issues from A7IV and later models...

Still no update for the A7RV although if you read the press release on the British site: https://www.sony.co.uk/presscentre/...o-enhance-real-time-recognition-af-auto-focus the footnotes say that the video authentication feature and vertical orientation for shooting information are coming to the A1, A7RV, and A7IV from November or later which implies a major firmware update is coming for those cameras next month I don't know what or later means but since the footnotes also say the A7SIII is supposed to get the authenticity info from 2026 onwards seems to indicate that the A1, A7RV and A7IV should be updated before the end of the year at the latest.. It doesn't mention whether they will get the autofocus improvements unfortunately but I'm hoping the A7RV will at least get the auto subject recognition.

Oh, thanks, that was really good news. The vertical shooting info will help my biggest problem on the A7RV. Having that white shooting info text over my LCD on the right side really messes up my compositions, so they become more 16:9 than 3:2 since I don't see if I place a hand to close to the edge or not when the text is there.

The EVF don't have this problem since the shooting info is outside of the image frame, but since Sony went from 4:3 to 3:2 screens on the LCD on newer bodys this has became a problem for me as someone that mostly shoots people and vertical is the new norm and I often have angles where the EVF isn't an option for framing.

So vertical shooting info will really help.

Installed this update on my A1ii this morning ..

AF and tracking of faces (esp. when far away / small) is much improved. So far I'm very impressed.

No problems with the install process either although it takes a while of waiting for the update to complete while staring at a blank screen. Just have patience.

Initial impressions are very good - the camera was a beast already and now it's even better. IMHO the AF tracking performance is definitely improved.

This is a must have update! Sony is leveraging the cameras internal AI chip and really to me this seems almost like getting a new A1-"2.5"

This camera is built for speed and this improves it's performance in key AF areas.

post an image of 1 eye in focus from 20 meters away from a full body shot, what lens even has that kind of shallow DOF 🤨 my 2010 point and shoot camera could detect a face from 50 meters away it doesnt mean it actually does any thing.

I never post images of people. I also do not post images online to order.

Aside from that, I’m not really sure what your point is here.

You don’t need shallow DOF to have one eye in focus Or to track a moving subject.. these are completely unrelated things.

Enjoy your 2010 point and shoot! My previous post was about the perceived improvements In my A1ii

I will refer you to the Sony video… they show some good examples with people.

While AF improvements are always welcome, are there any other improvements in 4.0?
The full manifest of changes is listed here ...

https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-1-series/ilce-1m2/software/00349486

... but as an ex-software engineer myself I'd suggest that there's also always a few (embarrassing) fixes that never get reported.
That’s the “Improves the operational stability of the camera” part at the bottom of the release notes.

Yes indeed .. that’s the catch all phrase!

the camera will use body tracking which is far more accurate than face at those distances, my a6700 from everyones point of view has better subject detection than my a7iv but in reality id take the accuracy of the a7iv any day of the week because it just doesnt miss where my a6700 is very good but does still miss sometimes.

Sometimes it’s the only thing there like with the last A7RV firmware update.

I’ve now updated my A1 ii with no issues.

I can't work out what the point is you are trying to make, can you clarify? What has this got to do with improved tracking on the A1ii and A9iii in this firmware?

the point is that the latest AF systems are not necessarily the most accurate and reliable. To much af complication now is sacrificing accuracy if you shoot both af systems its as plain as day. KISS who cares if the camera can pick out a face from 50 meters away. Simpler af systems are fast and accurate, i picked up the latest R5ii and did a side by side comparrision and its no different in speed at all. does no one actually test these cameras side by side and just go of spec sheets.

Ah ok, I understand your point. I can't think of an example time where I have thought a newer system was inferior to older systems, but I don't test these things either, so I can't say there aren't examples of when this might be the case.

R5ii ???

You do realize that this is the Sony forum that you are posting on?

Congrats on your new Canon. But posting about it's performance might get a better reception over there on the Canon forum.

I got rid of all my Canon gear years ago.

if you check his post history you would have some fun findings.. it's not about canon or sony or something, just really... uhm, let's say quite uncommon, opinions
