I already backup my photos on hard drives. But now I'd like to begin online photo storage. Mostly for my raw images. What I don't want is automatic backup. I want to be able to select which images and folders I want backed up. And I want a service that's easy to use.

Any recommendations?

Amazon Prime members automatically have unlimited full-resolution photo storage through Amazon Photos. RAW files are unlimited too. Video files are limited to 5 GB.

You probably have your hard disk photos arranged by folders. But Amazon Photos are accessed more like a database. The default view is by most recent photo first, but you can also search by date, location, person (using face recognition), or description (using scene recognition). I see my account has Albums and Folders, but I've never tried using them.

I was using it about a decade ago, but my cable ISP upload speed was a pretty miserable 10 Mbps at best. Uploading a massive amount of data became a miserable chore. I recently switched to fiber internet with 10 Gbps up/down speeds so I might try it again.

Here's a screenshot of what my homepage looks like:

Thanks for the idea. I have tried amazon photos, but some things about it I don't like. I don't like the format it uses. I rather have folders and be able to select folders by date or name. I don't like how amazon presents photos by "date taken". Amazon uploads all of my jpegs. I want to control which photos or folders get uploaded. And I don't like the screen gunked up with "memories from 2012" and offers to print photos.

Good to know that raw images can be uploaded.

I thought they have since implemented a Limit ; at least for RAW files?

I need to recheck mine, had it backing up but then thought I got a notification of it being full and had not been working since but admittedly have not bothered to double check it.

Could be the limit was for Video only which I hit and didn't realize the distinction.

I love DropBox - think 2GB is free, After that you pay. Have not found a better functioning product though, very simple to use and access.

Google Drive - you get 15GB free - though that is shared with any associated gmail account. Thing is gmail accounts are free to setup, so in theory you could create multiple gmail accounts you don't actually use for email and use each of them for the 15GB of storage backup. Having multiple accounts would not be a particularly well organized or clean way of doing things but would be zero cost.

If the Google solution was too messy and DropBox too size limiting ; would look into the paid DropBox options.

I am curious as to why; to what purpose?

Error alert: I have the 2 Terabyte plan, not 2 Gigabyte as I say in my last post.
Sorry for that!

Best regards,
I was a little puzzled why you were paying for a 2GB storage service.

2TB makes much more sense for a paid plan. Drop Box's lowest cost paid plan is also 2TB of storage.

You where completely correct into being puzzled!

They have also a 500 Gigabyte plan and a 10 Terabyte plan, all of them payable by month, year or lifetime.
I have the lifetime plan, and I advise everyone who intent to use it on the long one to get the lifetime option, in my case it paid for itself after 3 years.

Best regards,

My advice is to use files.fm because they offer the best face recognition solution I’ve seen. The prices are affordable, and the sharing galleries look great. I also receive notifications when a client opens a shared link, along with detailed statistics for viewed and downloaded photos. It even supports RAW filess.

Extra protection. Hard drives can fail or go missing. House fire or burglary.
Understood, though off-site with neighbour/family mitigates. I am yet to be convinced of security with online storage and it's not been unknown for Cloud storage systems to disappear into the .. well cloud.

That's a good point. An online storage company may be here today and gone tomorrow.
