What if we went back twenty-five years?

I would like to have more comments on these professional cameras from the years 1996-2001

/ Nikon D1 (1999-2000)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/maoby/albums/72157681439125054/

What do you think of the quality of the results for the time?

And if you had to choose, which camera would you like to use in the year 2000?
Probably the Nikon D1 because I sold a few of them to mates/PJ's/ customers .. but, as I was told by more than a few early users, I had it (relatively) easier with my Pentax film kit :-O ....... :-)

Cheers,

Jack

It's amazing what one can do when one doesn't know what one is doing :)

My plunge into digital was a Powershot g5 first model in 2001. (After about 25 years of film, slides ,b+w darkroom 6x6 the works.)

It cost a whopping €1250,- including speedlight and a big 256 Mb compact flash card.
My first foray into digital, Jake, was similar to yours except I got Canon G2 in Sept 2002 ($1000 CDN w/ a 256MB CF card $230 (w/ my staff discount thru' Canon and the SanDisk rep) plus, of course 12% taxes ..... then, in March 2003, I picked up a 512 MB CF card because the price had just dropped $150 to $300 CDN. Just imagine $530 for 3/4 of a gigabyte :-O
This little thing had full controls , even a hotshoe for extra flash. Foldable screen for the Rolleiflex experience, great for shooting the kids at their height. Tunnel viewfinder for in the sun. Autofocus was slooooow. Anticipation became second nature. Used it a lot. Nice and compact.

A few years later Conon eos 300d with Tamron zoom 24 300.
In November 2004, I picked up a Pentax IST*Ds kit for $1500 (?) CDN

Cheers,

Jack
After that a few tough camera's olympus not tough enough, panasonic, and still have the olympus tg-4 which is tough enough.

I was using a disposable Kodak camera, I can't remember the model number.

It wasn't the different models that were missing 😉

Disposable

What this policeman at bottom left was doing with this bottle : it look like he is helping someone exposed to tear gas, need to wash eyes with water, ideally mixed with lemon juice. Been there, done that at the 2001 Summit of the Americas in Québec city.

By collecting digital cameras, I ended up with several memory cards.

Memory cards :
I bow to the master :-)

Nice shot, that fire looks very real thru that Pentax gear.

Pentax is the 1980's Volvo of cameras: People who knew what they were buying got great value.

Thanks very much, Al :-)
Pentax is the 1980's Volvo of cameras:
I still feel the same way, except the only Volvo I pined after was the P1800 which was ended in 1973 (thirteen years before I started chasing the Photography /PJ bug ;-)
People who knew what they were buying got great value.
The only reason I purchased the Pentax K1000 over the Olympus OM-1 was because the Pentax had the 'thingy' on top :-D

Cheers,

Jack .......... thingy = hot shoe

In 2000, I was using film cameras for my travel pix. My top digital camera (it was my third one) was the Nikon CP950.

I took an early retirement the next year. Looking at my diminished income, I figured (boo hoo) I would never acquire any more camera gear. I was wrong about that.

The CP950 still works, but I don't have a compact flash card reader. I'm am glad to have lasted 25 years and also glad I can still afford good gear.

I was in my senior year of college majoring in Graphic Design 25 years ago. The art department had a point and shoot digital camera to loan out to students. The first one they had was an Epson PhotoPC; I don’t remember what model. Then they purchased a Nikon Coolpix. It was either the 800 or 880 model. I remember point and shoot digital cameras were pricey then and had wanted to get one, but being a poor college student I couldn’t afford one, let alone buying a DSLR at the time. It wasn’t until 2007 that I bought my first digital camera, a point and shoot.

I know what you mean, albeit from the sales side of the counter, Hesman. The first digital camera I sold was an Olympus D-620 L (https://www.dpreview.com/products/olympus/compacts/oly_d620l) for around $1800 CDN :-O

My first purchase in September 2002 was a Canon G2, when the G3 was coming out, and twas $1000 CDN and $230 for a 256MB CF card

OOC, what camera did you purchase in 2007?

Cheers,

Jack

Pentax M20. I used it for a few months before replacing it with a LUMIX LZ8. I used the heck out of the LZ8 until the dial for selecting different modes stopped working and the on/off switch intermittently worked. That prompted me to save up some $ to buy a DSLR.

I used my Canon G2, which I still have, until I made my way back to Pentax and purchased a Pentax IST*Ds in November 2004 and leapfrogged thru' several Pentax SLR's :-)

In 2000 I was still using my Olympus C-3030; didn't get into a DSLR until my D70 in 2004 and then a D2x in 2005.
