Rumor: Sony 50-150 f2 GM

Sonyalpharumours today posted the expected/rumoured specs of the lens:

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-50-150mm-f-2-0-gm-lens-specs/

Key elements:
  • 1340 gr
  • EUR 4400 (which usually includes 21% VAT)
So quite heavy and really expensive!
You left off the really key element...
  • It’s white(!)
That changes everything. Not sure why they went with white instead of black... But for a lot of people that alone would steer them to the Tamron.
I mean, you can always skin it, I vastly prefer black myself but these are relatively large lenses... You aren't gonna be incognito while holding one no matter what, and making it black with a vinyl skin just takes a little bit of time and is completely reversible so...

I really detest white lenses. I had to put a wrap on my 70-200mm GMII lol! All the more reason to stick with my 135mm 1.8GM as its alternative. It’s more compact and discrete being black. Albeit almost as heavy!

Also, €4400…. Wow.

I actually prefer white lenses :)... more importantly I prefer internal zooming, hope this one is internal, and takes TCs.

Completely missed the idea of TCs... That explains the white color, and makes it a 300mm/4!!! NOW I am interested... :)

OMG, you’re right. Makes my 70-200mm 2.8 GMII @ 280mm f4 with x1.4 TC an ancient relic….. take my £4,000 immediately for that extra 20mm at the long end….. 😉😂

Given the price and weight, if you're not interested in what it actually is (50-150/2) idk why you'd be any more interested if it'll take a 2x TC to become a 100-300 F4... You can just do that with the excellent 70-200/2.8 GM II and a 1.4x TC, pretty much the same thing but cheaper, lighter, and likely better.

One really should not go beyond 1.4, the 2 tend to quite noticeable reduce performance. I for sure would really not use such an expensive lens that is like 300g heavier than the 70-200 and 1.5x the cost, you could however make it into a 70-210 2.8 equivalent and have two lenses in one, obviously the 70-200 would overall do better at being a 70-200 lens, but needed be its a fine compromise for the last bit of reach… however I certainly don’t think making it into a 100-300 /4 is a particular good idea, better just buy that if that is what you desire once out

Agree 2x only if no alternative FL lens exists... Only lens that I read, does well with 2x TC is 300GM! (on zooms better stick to 1.4x only)

If one expects to shoot more in the range of 150-300mm range... get 70200GM2 and have 1.4x

If you primarily shoot between 85-150mm range get this lens, that gives you an option of 70-210 with 1.4x if need arises

BTW as per rumours its physical length is 200mm (same as 70200GM2), this length suggests its an internal zoom and TC compatible lens...

The fact its white more or less already told us that to be the case, so I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t take TC, is internal and have OSS

My favorite lenses are Sigma 18-35/1.8 and 50-100/1.8. I guess Sony's pair of F2s will make me happier

Zooms do tend to work less well with the 2x than primes, but Sony does break the rules sometimes. I'm going to wait to see how the lens I get performs with the teleconverters. I think it's possible they have made a lens which works better with the 2x than is generally the rule,.

It's pretty clear that Sony's lens design teams have been building their skills and abilities. The lenses they are creating now vs the lenses they were creating back when they started with full frame mirrorless... Plus the state of the art in lens design has advanced. We are living in interesting times...

Commenting because I'm actually excited about this lens. Currently I shoot with an A7III I've had since release, the 70-200GM that I bought with it, along with the 85 1.8, the Tamron 2875 G2, and the 200-600G. I've been enjoying photography as a hobbyist since having kids, which are my main subjects (at performances, sporting events, general life, etc.). I'm pretty happy with the images coming from my kit for my needs, and have resisted the urge to upgrade. When the 70-200 GMII was announced, I had some GAS. As I have been shooting sports more recently as my kids get more involved, I have some more GAS for the newer tracking autofocus advancements.

I think it's been long enough and I personally would notice enough improvement in my images that it's time for a refresh, starting with this lens (and a new body, maybe the A7V if it is ever announced, or stretch the budget up to an A1II?).

Based on my usage, the 50-150GM would stay on my camera 90% of the time. I would sell the 85 1.8 and the Tamron, and pick up the 28-70GM, too. That, with the 200-600G, would make for a pretty nice trinity IMHO (although selling the 200-600 and replacing it with the 300GM and 2x TC is a move I would love to make if I had infinite budget). Speaking of the Tamron 35-150, the lens seems great, but am I the only one that thinks the lens has bokeh that is "panicky?" My 70-200's background rendering is creamier to me, for lack of a better adjective.

I tried a monopod and monogimbal set up for the 200-600, but honestly, hand holding is fine and I don't like the additional gear, so when people complain about the weight of these lenses, I feel like it's a big :-|.

Here is the first video!

What a timely post and video (I don't frequent blogs and watch product videos much)! Thanks for posting. Makes me def want the lens. I am sure the lack of TC support is a turn off for many (I don't really use them, so...).

Absolute bonkers bokeh and transition performance of a zoom, just toss the 135/1.8 into the garbage bin

Along with the 50GM and 85GM :)

Those are still much lighter and cheaper and have a 1 stop advantage rather than a 1/3rd stop advantage. I do think sales of the 135GM will diminish amongst pros, but I think it was already kinda niche even vs the 70-200... Going forward I'm sure pros will favor this zoom though, and amateurs would favor a lighter/cheaper 135mm, although there'll be more used 135GM to buy and that can be a bargain.

I think we both are very surprised!!
No OSS, and no TC :-(
