Greetings -

I am heading on a long cruise to the Mediterranean in June, and have decided to go forward with the A7CR to replace my Nikon Z7. Before I pull the trigger on the Sony, does anyone have any information if Sony is planning an upgrade to the A7CR before June? I know the camera was introduced in 2023. I am not familiar with Sony's past history of how long a camera model stays in the rotation before being replaced.

Thanks in advance for your help -

Vic

Sony's typical cycle is 3-4 years. A7CR was released on September 2023, so, expect a Mark II (if there will be one) around September 2026.

Exactly, the original A7C was announced Sept 2020.

Thanks guys - much appreciated! I will therefore, after 50 years of dedicated Nikon use, be moving over to Sony with the purchase of the A7CR - I am looking forward to those beautiful image files in a compact package!

You will want some time to learn your new camera, but it might be worth waiting to see what discounts there are over the next 2-3 months.

There are rather a lot of FE lens choices.

After 2 years of A7RIV release Sony came out with A7RIVA (and A7RIIIA) variants, with updated LCD screens. Sony should update those outdated articulating LCDs on A7IV, A7CII, and especially on A7CR with 2M dot screen. But it's highly unlikely.

The updated screens of the A variants was a one time thing (so far), don't expect it to happen again as it was due to unavailability of the old screens.

A new A7CR will come out after the A7RVI, the C models where always months/years behind the full sized models.

My crystal ball is foggy. What I would expect is we won't see "updates" to the A7Rv (and the other models that picked up the processor, new menu, etc., like the A6700, a7CR and A7Cii) until the A7iv gets brought current. Now, that could pick up some new goodies pointing for future feature sets but there's no telling how quickly some of those things come along.

If wanting the A7CR, get it and learn it, there will be some learning curve to explore anyways.

I honestly have not had any issues using the LCD and EVF on my A7CR. The current resolution is plenty for me.

... long cruise to the Mediterranean in June, and have decided to go forward with the A7CR ...
Typical purchase trigger 😊

We went on a 5 weeks roadtrip last summer. Which initiated a swap from A7c to A7cR. Very satisfied!!

it is very unlikely that any new A7R model will be released before end of 2025 - I would expect more 2026ish and the A7cR II likely one year later.

I do hope we'll see a super high resolving A7R successor as soon as possible - holding my breath for that - enough oxygen till beginning of 2026 :-D

Only logical answer is Sony MIGHT launch a C version of the A9ii or A1. Otherwise, I don't think we will see a C versions of the 7 or 7R cameras this year.

One last though. Mark Galer has put out a review of the Sony RX1R2, so the timing would be ideal for an RX1R3.

Yes, The drums are beating stronger on this possibility. Another site has just done a
"best FF compact" survey and has rated the RX!r2 very highly and pointed out what a bargain it now is used., compared to the Leicas.

But Sony has the A7CR and A7C2. Compare the size and versatilty of these models with the Leicas. I'd get the Sony models every time.

Sony also currently has a major survey out for Sony users of the A7CR. They are thinking very hard about this model and where it goes next. Pretty much every aspect of the camera is up for user comment. I can't remember Sony ever doing this before. The model range is clearly seen as very important by them. Yes there will be more A7C line cameras but I don't think it will be in the next 12 months.

One of the questions suggests that Sony might be thinking of a stripped down model aimed specifically at atill photographers than video makers. Such a model might have a simplifies control/menu layout that would appeal to those who prefer the Leica approach.

Interesting times.

Not trying to be a negative person but I don't think that survey is being done by Sony. It's probably some third-party collecting data.

First page mentioned an email address: [email protected]
So if you contact them, you can ask if it's a genuine survey. I think it is.

It is an official Survey by Sony. Here's what is said at the beginning of the survey and the survey is reached through an official Sony site.

I guess I didn't notice that. Hopefully, it is a good sign for A7C series.

Correct....though Sept 2026 - Sept 2027 would be more accurate.

Sony a7C-Series cameras are on their own timeline independent of a7/a7R updates - but "Not before Fall 2026" is a very safe bet.
