Very odd announcement. It's a whole lot of nothing. Not that this would be in my price range.

Not odd at all, that's how they do their flagships. Here is the dev announcement for 1Dx mk III - https://global.canon/en/news/2019/20191024.html

Any R1 you heard before was imagination or rumor. This is Canon telling us it's a real thing in the works (and going by history, perhaps just a few months away)

Thanks!

So the rumours were only partially correct: it's not a presale release, and there's nothing about the R5II.
One of the rumors did say R5 ii launch and a R1 dev announcement in may with general availability later in the year (I think they said R5 in July and R1 in Q4). More announcements can come anytime. I am not sure if they will mix any other body with any R1 announcement, but who knows. And I'm not sure if that really matters too
From the description, it looks like they're only announcing it now because there will be R1s at Olympics.
That, and also because that is how they do it. The 1Dx mk iii dev announcement wasn't right next to olympics

Quickly to dismiss the rumor sites? I only remember seeing them (CR) predicting pre-announcement of the R1. With expected announcement and availability for the public much later in the year.

And the R5II might follow shortly ("real announcement" expected, but unclear when will be in the shops).

So again in defense of the rumorsite some like to bring in miscredit. The word is Canon are going to use OL and EURO 2024 to "promote them", similar to how Canon did with R3.

At last. . . It looks quite pretty, doesn’t it?

But Canon doesn’t really tell us much. There’s that line about ‘field testing’ it (some to be handed out in Paris, presumably?) which presumably means they’ve got some prototypes ready.

But not production models? They’re ‘aiming for a 2024 release’. . .which sounds like hedging their bets a bit. And it does leave open the possibility it might not really be available until early 2025. I wonder if the later rumours about them running into problems had some truth to them after all? And maybe some suspicions thar this is actually an ‘R1 mkii’ or even an ‘R1 mkiii’ were correct?

They’re really isn’t anything in the way of actual specifications; whether any will leak out in June or July we’ll have to see, but I suspect anyone who gets one in their hands in June/July will also have to have signed a stiff NDA, so we’ll no doubt get more months of speculation and guesswork from the rumour sites. . .

I’m sure this will enthuse a lot of Canon owners who’ll be performing sacrifices to the gods in gratitude that this thing’s actually real at last—three years after it was first thought to be coming—but I don’t know if a ‘development announcement’ like this really cuts it in 2024.

I wonder if Canon got so fed up with the endless speculation and guesswork—let alone people wondering if it would ever arrive—that their hand was forced a bit?

They predicted more than one camera shipping in June-July.

They may stagger the announcements, yes, will they start selling the R5II before the R1?

From Canonrumors: "Canon will officially announce two full-frame camera bodies this month."

I agree there's still room for an announcement of the R5II.

Having said that, I have to say Canon’s PR people are much better at getting some excitement and anticipation out of not a lot than Sony’s are when they’ve got everything in front of them.

Noise Reduction baked in oh oh - well at least they are admitting they are doing that now.
Tell me more. What do you know about that feature?
Read all about it below - it's easy to miss lol !!!

"The combination of the new image processing system and deep learning technology will help to improve image quality. Canon implements the image noise reduction function, which has been previously developed and improved as part of the software for PCs, as a camera function to further improve image quality and contribute to user creativity."

TOKYO, May 15, 2024—Canon Inc. announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM equipped with an RF mount and is aiming for a 2024 release.

The EOS R1 is a mirrorless camera geared toward professionals that brings together Canon’s cutting-edge technology and combines top-class performance with the strong durability and high reliability sought in a flagship model. This camera will dramatically improve* the performance of both still images and video and meet the high requirements of professionals on the frontlines of a wide range of fields including sports, news reporting, and video production.

This camera employs the newly developed image processor DIGIC Accelerator in addition to the pre-existing processor DIGIC X. The new image processing system, composed of these processors and a new CMOS sensor, enables large volume of data to be processed at high speeds and delivers never-before-seen advancements in Auto Focus (AF) and other functions.

By combining the new image processing system and deep learning technology to an advanced degree, Canon has achieved high-speed and high-accuracy subject recognition. For example, subject tracking accuracy has been improved so that in team sporting events where multiple subjects intersect, the target subject can continually be tracked even if another player passes directly in front of them. In addition, the AF “Action Priority” function recognizes subject movement by rapidly analyzing the subject’s status. In moments during a sports game when it is difficult to predict what will happen next, this function automatically determines the player performing a certain action, such as shooting a ball, as the main subject and instantly shifts the AF frame, thereby helping to capture decisive moments of gameplay.

The combination of the new image processing system and deep learning technology will help to improve image quality. Canon implements the image noise reduction function, which has been previously developed and improved as part of the software for PCs, as a camera function to further improve image quality and contribute to user creativity.

Canon is working on field tests for this camera, and will support capturing definitive and impactful moments at international sporting events to be held in the future.

Going forward, Canon will continue to expand the EOS R SYSTEM lineup of fascinating cameras and RF lenses, thereby continuing to meet the demands of a wide range of users and contribute to the development of photography and video culture.

Yes. They predicted there might be more than one camera shipping in June-July. But that was never about the R1. That is an unknown extra registered camera. There have been guessing about an R9 or R6III and more. But have really no clue, except we might get two "real announcements" soon. The R1 was always expected to be a pre-announcement.

That is what CR was/is expecting.

That may refer to an option for in camera processing as opposed to baked in NR. I guess we will find out as more information is released.

I've read it, that part is clear. But that's not what I was asking lol !!!

Still eager to hear what you think they are admitting to here? That something that was not done in camera before will now be available in camera? Or did you make some far fetched deductions that they haven't actually said above?

To me, the wording seems clear. Until now people have been using PC software for noise reduction, but the R1 will aim to do that well in-camera to improve SOOC shots and make further software adjustments less necessary.

Regarding other points that people have made, it was clear with the R3 launch that it was the best they could do at that time, and was not a 1-series replacement, more as an interim step.

But it was pretty close, and I wonder if we will ever see an R3 Mark II? Maybe not. If we do, would it be smaller, like the EOS 3 compared with the EOS 1V?

I get a feeling that Canon are not where they want to be with the R1 in terms of timing, they are behind where they were at this stage with the R3 four years ago.

It will be interesting to see the megapixel count. Maybe it will leak out with the Olympics, as it did with the R3, but maybe not this time.
