Hello

i am wondering if i put Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM on Sony Alpha 6700 ? what focal lenght will it be ?

Will it be 35mm FF Equivalent ?

Are there any bad things using FF Lens on APSC body ?

Thanks

The focal length of ALL 24 mm lenses is 24 mm no matter what the sensor size.

These two pictures will look identical if the sensor technology is the same.
  1. APS-C sensor with 24 mm lens at f/1.4 and ISO 100
  2. FF sensor with 36 mm lens at f/2.1 and ISO 225
To go from #1 to #2, multiply focal length and aperture by 1.5, and multiply ISO by 1.5^2 (which is 2.25).

That's why people say 24 is (roughly) 35 mm equivalent.

There's nothing wrong with putting a FF lens on a crop-sensor body. But you're paying more money for the lens and not using all of the image. If you don't plan on using a full frame body, you could save a lot of money by looking at a Sigma 23/1.4 or Zony 24/1.8 (used copy).

I have used the FF Samyang 75mm 1.8 and Sony 85mm 1.8 on my A6400 and liked both of them a lot. As you do not use the corners of the lens, you mostly get a very sharp image. I was surprised to find that my Samyang was sharp from corner to corner wide open on my APS-C-camera and it has become my favorite portrait-lens.

okay , how about field of view ?

in FF Body , i will get 24mm field of view

in APSC body , i will get 36 mm field of view ? more zoom ?

thanks

The problem is , A7C2 body still a lot more expensive than A6700

while i can buy A6700 Body , i want to buy a good lens , but most of sony apsc lens released years ago

Thank you !

There are many excellent lenses for Sony APS-C for any kind of photography. The 16-55G 2.8 is the best lens for a vast array of situations such as portraits, landscape etc. It is incredibly sharp and has very fast AF. After getting this lens, I sold all my prime lenses as the Sony is so good.

Yes, Sony hasn't been doing much with new apsc releases.

Sigma has a couple of really nice newer ones out now: 18-50 f/2.8 and 10-18 f/2.8. Both easily rival the Sony lenses.

is F2.8 enough for low light ?

like family dinner

or photo at japan alleyway at night ?

yes , that's why i am thinking to buy FF lens , because it's newer ?

For frequent low light or even night photography I'd recommend the Sigma 16mm 1.4, the Sigma 23mm 1.4 or the Sony 15mm 1.4, giving you a two-stop advantage over a 2.8-zoom. I hate swapping lenses, so I stick to my excellent 16-55G. If your photography does not involve moving subjects, you could also use a tripod at night. You should also consider the Sony-bodies with IBIS (A6700 or A6600).

Newer is not necessarily better. You'll have a hard time finding better lenses than the Sony 16-55 or the Sigma 56mm 1.4 although they have been released several years ago. Some of the first generation E-Mount-lenses were not very good quality and I would not recommend them.

I have the full frame Samyang 24mm F1.8. I use it on A7RIII and A6600. It works great on both. On the A6600 it works as a approx 35mm.

When you go to buy a FF lens, no one checks to see if you have a Ff camera ;-)

My A6700 has never had an APS-C lens on it. Most often it has the 20-70mm f/4 G, or the 70-200mm f/4 G. Both of those lenses are reasonably compact, and balance very well on the A6700.

The A6700 works well as a lightweight “carry all day” body, and as a backup for a bigger FF body (A7RV, for example). So hang onto it when/if you buy a FF body. It is also a perfectly sensible choice by itself.

Newer lens don't mean better.

I use Sigma 23mm f1.4 for lowlight interior family shooting on A6400.

Hovewer, with today's AI denoise software is no issue to shoot with f2.8 zoom.

Absolutely true - a new lens can be worse. But a lot of Sony's new lenses, especially their new G and GM lenses, are major improvements on the past. The new 70-200 zooms are excellent, for example.

And the A6700 has an even better sensor than the A6400.
