Is it possible? I know about wireless solutions such as the CamRanger II , which I already own. But I’d like a hardwired solution.

HDMI yes. At least it is with the Z6 and I can't imagine it's any different with the Z7 (either version)

USB C? Maybe if you're running capture 1 or some other tethering software. I doubt the camera outputs video normally out the USB.

Thank you. HDMI it is.

You can test it just plugging it into your home TV .

No idea if this helps or if didnt got the question right.

I use an android old phone, via HDMI acquisition dongle, and an APP called Newcam or something like that.
Ask and I post you details.

I hope you see the dongle on the left behind camera monitor

Let me know if it is what you asked 😁

Here we go:
App for android that I'm using: Next Camera -- it's free.

Note:

on the dongle user manual are listed some App for Android as well as for IOS.

HDMI acquisition dongle: From ALIEXPRESS 27€
on Amazon that's not the same model 20€ but it should give you an idea

Micro HDMI Amazon8€ from the camera to Dongle to use on the Amazon version

SMALLRIG head 10€

And a phone bracket I already had.
The phone is a Nova 5T I've kept as a spare for too a long time.
Battery last for 45 minutes as an active monitor.
>>>>Touch screen is not translated back to the camera

Really professional DIY, isn't it???

No. iPads do not accept wired HDMI input. They can not be used as a monitor that way.
No direct HDMI connection even on Android. Check my previous post.

For Apple ::::
You need an acquisition box ....
....with a USB lighting cable to the iPhone, and an HDMI cable to the camera.

Or a Dongle similar of what I did on my DIY system

Hi - Reply meant for Ellis Vener

If you have ipad with usb-c, try cascable app with direct usb-c tethering. You can use powered usb-c hub if you want to have ipad charging and can then even shoot diectly to usb external harddrive with pro version if setup storage link.

It also works on lightning connector ipad’s, but need usb3 camera usb or otg adapter. Works fine on my 2nd gen ipad pro 2017 this way with 3rd party adapter. Usb2 apple adapter does not work.

It supports liveview, but I have only tested it with thethered capture to compare to capture one ipad - latter tethering is faster, but no liveview and save to external storage options.

There is free 7 day trial of pro version that you can test functionality and reliability before subscribing or buying outright for60usd.

Here is some youtube video demo’s

Edit- You need to enable photo review - manual setting to get photo displayed when using tethering mode. Does not do automatically. Also only saves to camera card by default, so need to set app or ipad folder location if also want to save copy to ipad. I prefer folder, as can then import to lightroom mobile or open in photoshop. Save to app can only be accessed from within cascable app.

Thanks Bennie!

Why not one of the dozens of products made for this like a atomos ninja v?

An iPad is something quite a few people already have and use for various tasks, and even carry with them when using their cameras.

An Atomos Ninja is a single-purpose product that costs nearly as much as an iPad. Besides, the Atomos' display is much smaller than that of an iPad, even that of an iPad mini.

Yes, if the primary use is for recording stuff, the Atomos surely wins, as it allows for external storage, but if it is used just as a detached monitor, it's quite expensive.

I have a portable 8" tft monitor with HDMI input that I can power from a USB power bank. I use it for stills photography when I place my camera in places where I can use neither EVF nor the backside display. When photographing ceilings (as in cathedrals, for instance), I place the camera on a bean bag right onto the floor, pointing straight up. Since I use a UWA lens, correct alignment is crucial, and for that I use the external monitor.

Had there been a way to use my iPad with HDMI input several years ago, I would not have bought the monitor.

There’s also a bunch of under 150 dollar stuff that are monitors only. No kludging required

I can confirm the Elgato Cam Link 4K works with an Android 12 tablet with the nExt Camera app. HDMI out from my Z7II to the Cam Link into the tablet.

You need a mini HDMI male to full HDMI male to get HDMI out of the Z7II into the Cam Link, and then USB-A to USB-C adapter to go from the Cam Link to the tablet. I believe any adapter will do.

NOTE: It works only as a monitor/recorder meaning you can't control the camera with the app. But you can record photos/video internally on the tablet. (It seems this setup essentially replaces your tablet's camera with the external camera.)

If you want to control the camera via your tablet, the Nikon SnapBridge app obviously works. But a higher end app called Camera Connect and Control gives a lot more functionality and also allows you to use a USB cable (as well as WiFi or BT). For me, it's better than SnapBridge.

FWIW - I also use the Cam Link to setup my Z cameras a webcam to my Windows 11 laptop. I find the Cam Link's HDMI connection much sharper and less latency than using Nikon's USB webcam app. The only issue with HDMI as webcam is there is potentially a lag between HDMI video and computer audio - the video is a few frames behind the video.

This is an HDMI protocol issue. There are two solutions: 1) capture audio via your camera so the audio/video is already synced when it leaves the camera and enters the Cam Link/computer. This is my preferred solution - I use either an on-camera shotgun or wireless mic setup, although the camera's internal mics also work in a pinch); 2) use OBS as your computer capture app and adjust the audio/video sync there.

The advantage of video monitors tend to be

1) focussing and exposure tools

2) mounting and powering options. They all will have at least 1/4" mounts. Will take standard batteries. Some will also handle USB power.

3) the newer ones can be very bright. I forget how bright the Ninja is but there are budget monitors at over 2k Nits.

4) Some have headphone ports or other ports you may want. Not helpful for stills of course.

Yes - use a Accsoon SeeMo HDMI To IOS Adapter

Where do you find a lightening to usb-c adapter ? I tried plugging in my lightening to usbc cable but would not work in capable. Trying to find adapter but no luck
