X-E4 discontinued. What can we expect next?

I was on BH backorder list and just got an email with this message:

"You are receiving this message because you asked to be notified when this item becomes available. We regret to inform you that this item has unfortunately been discontinued."

Do you think will be an X-E5 soon or that was it for the X-E line? Fuji executives at their interview were pretty vague and avoid giving any real information.

That just sucks. I hope you weren't waiting long.

I originally thought they were having so much success with the XE line since the XE4's were not to be found. But now I wonder if the unavailability of the X100V's may have driven XE4 sales as a plan B for many people.

I'd like to see the XE line continue but I'd rather see them keep a significant portion of the original form factor but make some improvements such as the EVF.

Agree the XE4 could be seen as the best next thing after the X100V. A friend of mine bought a new XE4 +27mm kit from a third-party seller on Amazon for $1500!

Hi,

I posted here about a month ago that a major retailer in Australia was saying the XE4 had been discontinued. People seemed to think that advice was premature and that the shortage might relate to supply chain issues and/or Fuji's manufacturing priorities lying with the XH2, 2S and XT5..... It seems not. They can't be found anywhere - and now the same advice is coming out of B&H in the US.

Will there be an XE5, perhaps with 40mpx sensor? Don't know. I hope so, but there has not been the slightest tip or rumor in that direction. I would happily buy a very small, light and well featured ILC to take my hiking/travel kit of 16/2.8, 27/30 and 60mm. There's nothing wrong with the X100V, but I don't want one, no matter how chic or how cool, because it's not an ILC.

Commiserations,

Rod

There was a story some time ago that it was already discontinued in some markets (including Japan I think?) - I’d mentioned that before in threads asking after stock and been told it couldn’t possibly be right, seems like it probably was though.

My theory is they have finite stock now of the fourth gen parts (the 26mp sensor and processor) which they’re diverting entirely into the X100V production to meet demand. The X-Pro3 is also out of production allegedly, the XT3 is long gone, XT4 likely finished in the wake of the XT5, that just leaves the XT30 and the X100V and it’s the latter that seems to be driving sales.

You may be right but I'm not sure of the logic of this. There has been a lack of availability of both the XE4 and X100V models for a long time. There appears to be a demand for both. Retailers can't sell items they can't stock and people aren't placing an order and waiting because retailers can't even give you an estimated re-stocking date. I'm not sure why demand for one model that isn't available should be read as exceeding that for another model that isn't available.

I suspect people wanting a light, flat topped, RF style, APSC ILC camera will have just switched to Sony. There's no other option if you're a new buyer. That hasn't suited me simply because I already own Fuji lenses.

Fingers crossed for either a mint-ish used one or an XE5 announcement.

I just find trends funny. The XE4 was in no way a ground-breaking change from the XE3. IMHO, useability is worse. The big improvement was just marketing. Just sold my XE3..didn't get any interest in it until i tagged it with XE4 and made the connection for people.

Let's see what Fuji's next move is. I doubt they would release an X-E5 before, and with better specs than the next X100.

I wish brands could be more transparent with their product roadmaps.

My guess is the X-E series is no more.

Well I am glad I found and was able to buy it last spring. I love this little sucker with the 27mm/2.8 essentially glued to it. Even if Fuji should come out with a XE-5 with a 40mp sensor, I would not buy. I am more than satisfied with the XE-4 as is with its 26mp. Now if they came out with an XPro4 with a 40mp sensor, that is a different story.

I think Fujifilm miscalculated how many 26mp sensors they would need (confounded by supply chain woes), and now they’re out, and have chosen not to produce more since the long-term plan is to move all lines to the 40mp sensor. (26mp stacked sensor excepted)

The XS is next, followed by the XP4 and possibly either X100 or XTxx this fall. I wouldn’t count on the XE5 until 2024. And that’s a long time for the shelves to be bare, but not much else to do.

We can expect X-E5. The question is with 26 or 40 mp sensor? In the Fuji CP+ interview, they have not dismissed the former sensor going forward. Given that the X-E line is targeted more at "content creators looking for a light option", 26 mp seems enough.

! agree, bought a XE4/27 II over the X100V. Hope the XE line continues.

I hope you're right about the continuation of the XE line. With experience of the 26Mp (XE4 + XT4) and the 40Mp (XT5) sensors, I'd be happy to continue at 26, but marketing may opt for 40. Either way, but especially if they stay at 26, what additional features might they add to generate sales? For me IBIS is a candidate, but only if it does not materially enlarge the form factor or increase weight.

When I moved to Fuji in 2016, there were rumours then that the X-E2s would be the last in the line, only for the X-E3 to be launched the following year. Knowing how long it takes to develop a product, the release will have been in the making for years at that time.

I don't have access to Fuji's sales data (obviously), but looking at some indicators (e.g. the XF27WR news release about demand exceeding expectation, availability - or lack thereof - of X-E4/X-Pro3/X100V) I'd expect demand for the X-E4 to be more than sufficient. My impression is that the buzz and attention far exceeded the X-E3.

So I'd be very surprised - and disappointed - if there were no X-E5 to follow it eventually.

As for how long we'll have to wait, here's what I'd anticipate (pure speculation):

That's interesting. I only see a constant with the X-T and X-Tx0 cameras, the rest are all over the place.

It is odd to discontinue a model (X-E4) if the next one will be release one year or more later. I think the X-E line is either gone or the X-E5 release is coming soon along with the X-Pro4 :)

Well, it was obviously a parts issue. You just can't use all the parts on your cheapest camera even if it is popular.

I think we will see another X-E in the future. The X100, X-Pro and X-E series are very popular right now and I do not think Fuji (and other manufacturers) can ignore it. Some people want small, high quality cameras that are not shaped like a DSLR. That is clear. Fuji would be stupid to ignore this. Believe me, I am sure Fuji wants to have stock of all of their cameras. It must kill them to not be able to supply the market.

Thankfully, I have my X-Pro3 and X-E4. I will buy another Fuji when the X-Pro4 comes out.

Fuji didn't market it in any different way vs the X-E3 though... it is social media doing it for them.

I do not see it the same way... how are they all over the place? Also, the X-T40 isn't coming.

Well, it's an odd time in the industry. It is not a Fuji problem, it is an industry problem.
I think the X-E line is either gone or the X-E5 release is coming soon along with the X-Pro4 :)
Well, yeah...the X-Pro and X-E are coming, but probably not until the end of 2023 at the earliest.

I think the X-T40 will be this year from your graphic - considering the X-T30 II wasn't even much of an upgrade to begin with.

Yeah, it's called the X-S20. ;)
