I’m trying to decide if I should save a little more money and get the a7III, or if I should just go with the a6400 now. Since the a6400 is a bit newer, does it have any advantages? Better autofocus tracking? Has anyone used it with the Tamron 70-300?

I’m hoping the A7IV will come out later this year, and that I can afford it, and then have a 2 camera system going on with the a6400.

If the a6400 has no significant advantages over the a7iii, I may just go ahead and get the a7iii.

I believe the A6400 has better (the latest) eye AF and AF tracking over the A7iii, which is getting long in the tooth. Also the A7iii does not have a flash. Of course it has a FF sensor which is about a stop better. The lenses tend to be larger and more expensive. Just a set of tradeoffs to consider.

Largely depends what you want to use it for. If your a sorts or wildlife photographer the a6400 may gave advantages , if you a portrait or landscape photographer the a7iii might be better. The a7iii is one of Sonys most popular cameras for good reason but consider also the lenses you may need and if they fit into your budget.

The A7iii is a full frame camera, with the advantages (or disadvantages) of the larger Sensor. It has IBIS. The A6400 is an aps-c sensor body. It has a more recent focus system so is better in that in some ways. It doesn't have IBIS. The A6400 and A7iii and likely iv would use different batteries so it adds a bit of difference there. I would expect the A7iv would have IBIS and as good or better focus system performance than the A6400.

If using two different sensor sizes, you'd want to consider the crop factor when selecting lenses and/or if the cropped resolution difference is important to you.

Thanks everyone! I just bought the a6400! I do mostly wildlife photography, so I really think I’ll enjoy the fact that it’s APS-C. I also want to wait and see what Sony does with their A7IV before committing to a more expensive full frame.

Now I just need to figure out what my first non-kit lens will be!

Sony 70-350 or Tamron 70-300 or the upcoming 18-300

Or Sigma 100-400 if you don't mind some more bulk.

All nice gear.

But if OP is really serious into wildlife I can recommend from own experience the 200-600 which in combination with the a6400 is a joy for bird/wildlife photography.

Look also Justin's post here (who shoots mostly the 200-600 on an a6600): https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/65436001
