I must have cleaned the front element too strongly. Now while this doesn't affect the picture quality in any way, I am trying to sell the lens and was wondering if camera lab could eventually do something to remove the scratches or perhaps re-apply the coating. Anyone had a similar experience?

Lens coating can not be repaired. It will cost more than the lens is worth to get the damaged element stripped of its current coating, and then get it recoated again. It will be cheaper to buy another lens, or perhaps a donor lens. Just sell it as is, or keep the lens, since it shouldn't effect IQ too much.

Did you try wet cleaning? Coating is some protective material, not so easy to scratch it. Normally after wet cleaning, only the deep scratches be left.

Yes, replace the front element with a new one from Canon if available.

This is what I have done on the EF 15mm , 14mm L, & 28-70mm L over the years!

Out of all the lenses you have had repaired, how much was the average cost of replacing the front element?

I replaced the front element myself.

The only recollection is Canon USA parts charged me $115 for the front element, spanner nut, and felt seat.

Interesting. That's more affordable than I expected.
