I have to admit that I’ve not delved deeply into B&W work (discounting whatever I might have done many years ago before color became more prevalent and affordable). However, I think this is a worthy comparison and I’ll be interested to see how others view it. For me, your second image “wins the prize.” The darker tones seem more consistent with the setting and significantly contribute to the mood. Also, there is some haloing (for lack of a better term) around the tops of the buildings and tree in the lighter image, which for me, at least, is a bit distracting.

It’s a nice image and definitely would be a place I’d enjoy visiting (I might even bring my camera :-) ).

Thx for comments I did not see at once the halos because I'm working on the laptop and the screen even it is HD might trump you depending on the angle of view ...

Fougères Castle close to Rennes, Brittany

I'll try to get abetter copy in the light tones if I can

I'm a fan of B&W and have been doing quite a bit of experimenting lately, particularly during my COVID walks around Annapolis where I live. #2 is my favorite, #3 is too washed out for my personal tastes.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi,

Nice set Baobob. I like them all, but then I'm a sucker for castles. It's a very long time since I wandered Brittany. The second is, I guess, the classic B&W, but there is still something about the third 'bleached' one that I like - viewed at any distance it almost conveys a pencil-sketch look.

Jerry mentioned the haloing. What causes that? I don't do a lot of PP and have little in-depth knowledge of it. I notice haloing around skylines and say trees against sky. Is it something caused at high contrast image edges right at exposure - like a light bleed across pixels, or is it maybe an artifact left from CA correction?

Thx.

Cheers, Rod

Thx I'll try another go avoiding halo obviously due to overcooking...

Looks a tad overexposed to me. I’d crank it down 1/3-2/3 of a stop and see how it looks. Very much a matter of personal preference, so there probably isn’t any “right” or “wrong” here.

The idea is to try to get a pencil drawing like aspect

Wether or not I was successful, I don't know ....

something that is probably close to your preference ..

Yup, the increased contrast makes the difference for me. However, what I think doesn’t really matter much here... the question is whether this is the look you were going for.

All comments and critiques are useful for the photographer since photos are supposed to be shared with others

So were your useful comments and the last BW version I posted is definitly better.

:-)

Here is a link to my photos of the castle and the old town plus the church

just tell me when you arrive (virus free :-) ), I'm an amazing tourist guide .......

The pencil drawing - look makes the image looking like "old" - like from some old book or print. I can understand why it sometimes looks very nice, but why not to use just paper and a soft pencil.. I am perhaps more like a purist - i like photographs to look like photographs ;-) - BW or colour

The first image (with colors) has interesting green colour (lichen ?) on the grey stones. I like it more than the BW version... The blue sky could be a bit darker so that the clouds become more visible - in the BW image the sky looks "better" IMO.

The B&W images (the latest iteration of the "drawing") are ok and I think there is a place/use for both, you just have to find a proper one. To my eyes the color image is too blue. A slight shift towards yellow might balance it. It may slightly effect to the B&W ones otoh the change in luminosity is subtle.

Indeed a bit too blue thx
