Leaving Nikon for Sony

I am returning/selling my Nikon Z6, Nikon Z 35mm F1.8 S, Nikon Z 50mm F1.8 S & Nikon Z 85mm F1.8S.

Coming Friday, my Sony A7iii, Sony FE 28mm F2.0, Sony FE 50mm F1.8 & Sony FE 85mm F1.8

Oil spots on my Z6 sensor, over and over. Wet cleaning the sensor after each shoot. Finally had enough. This former Nikon Fan Boy is switching.
Were you able to ascertain whether the recurrence of oil spots was a commonplace occurrence with the Z6?

I've read anecdotal reports (e.g., by Lloyd Chambers and Tony Northrup) that Sony mirrorless bodies are dust prone, though I have no firsthand experience with this (I do not own any Sony mirrorless currently, except an old NEX body).

That's nothing a quick blow with a rocket blower can't fix, though. Oil's a whole different beast.

I hope your A7 III meets and/or exceeds your expectations.
Yes, the Rocket Blower was useless with my copy of the Z6. Oil spots just like I once had with my former D600. In fact, even worse. I had to wet clean after each shoot. I expect dust, of course, but oil is not good. I tested it several times, and it would always reapear. So with my former D600 and Z6 with oil spots and my former D800 with back-focusing, I finally got angry enough to walk away. If my future Sony A7iii gets only dust that can be blown off, I'll be thrilled.
I was waiting for the oil spots issue to resolve when I was shooting Nikon and finally gave up. Moved first to an NEX-6, then an A7 - and never looked at Nikon again. Most of my best lenses were all full-frame film era babies - 80-200/2.8 two-ring, 85mm f2 AiS and 105mm f2.5 AiS. I shot them MF on my A7, then my A7II

When TechArt came out with their AF adapter, those lenses all became AF on my A7II and even better (cause of faster processor) on my A7III.

I ended up buying 2 TechArt Pro AF adapters. For more than a year, I’ve had the best of both Nikon and Canon (FD lenses like the 85mm f1.2L and 135mm f2.8). You’ll be happy going Sony.

Between the 50 1.8 and 35 1.8, i would definitely go with the 35, but that's also a FL preference more than the pure optical quality concern though.
I find 50mm really dull as a FL - I picked up the sigma 35 F1.2, and so far it seems like an amazing lens...big though!
Wow, Sigma 35 F1.2 is exactly my next lens. played with it many times already when shooting out with friends so I know that's THE lens for me, size and weight is the last thing i care about, in fact, I added a vertical grip to my 7R IV to make it a little bigger, LOL.
I am also contemplating buying a 5d Mk iv to complement my Sony, I miss my Canon DSLR with pure optical viewfinder... I owned a series of 5D's from original to mk1 and mk2... I miss those cams. Some of my nicest images taken. Size is of no concern for me either.

OK Sony people, how does the A7iii handle lens distortion? In camera? If so, where is the setting? For RAW in post only? I am using Sony's Capture One software.

not that it matters now but if I had a camera that did this after 50 images I would have retuned it right away and got a 2nd copy.

Anything can be defective.
I had this happen with my former D600. I was tired of dealing with it. Switched by choice.

Hey that is fine. It was more lost in trust over a product. Like getting food poison and never going back to that restaurant

Hi,

Firstly, welcome to this corner of the madhouse.

Lens distortion is on Camera Setting 1, page 2/14 -> Lens Comp. In theory those only apply to jpeg images and written as metadata in the raw file. However some users reporting weird behaviour with shading enabled (correction applied twice by some raw converters) so I believe the consensus is to set Shading to Off and Chroma + Distortion to Auto.

Unlike the Z6, you can disable lens corrections in software. That's another fun discussion in dpr's lens reviews, where S lens have corrections applied in the gallery and Sony lenses don't.

It is neither right nor wrong, it just is.

I have owned 5D series from 1, 2 and 3 and still own 1D3. Moved to Sony years ago. Used to carry A7r and 5D3 into trips before completely moving over. I usually carry two bodies (used to carry 2 DSLRs) and even 3 bodies (such as in my January trip to Chile that supposed also to the Antarctica but that one was canceled due to bad weather prevent from flight 3 days in row), A7r IV, A7r III and A9. Good luck if you want to carry 3 5D IVs or even 3 1Dx II ;-) Size/weight matters in every way including what camera bag to use.

Oil in a mirrorless body? This sounds really odd, especially as I have never seen a ny reports on this before in the Z6.
I thought the oil was due to the mirror mechanism in DSLR? I wonder if it's due to the shutter (what other moving part is there that might require lubrication?)
