Is the Sony a7r good for astrophotography? Even going the next step with an astro conversion? Looking at the a7r because I might be able to get a cheap one or would the a7s be the one to get if at a good price?

What astro subjects are you interested in: Milky Way with foreground on a fixed tripod, nebula with a tracking telescope, planets, all of these?

A camera conversion would be very useful for Ha emission nebula if you have an interest in that particular type of target. Before you convert your particular camera, it would be useful to check to see if you can get a light pollution filter that installs inside the body, otherwise you'll have to put it on the lens (or telescope) which could be expensive; and without the filter the benefit of conversion would be compromised.

You may have heard about the Sony a7xx star eater problem. It has not been an issue with my a7Rii.

This would be a good question for the astrophotography forum.

Milky Way from Pisco basecamp, Peru, 15,000 ft. Unconverted, no filters.

Been reading about the star eater problem and the mk I's are supposed to be no problem but the mk. II's have the issue but the firmware update helped that out. I was mainly interested in Milky Way shots and starry sky pictures

Sony cameras are fine for starscapes and Milky way photography.

The star eater issue can be a problem if doing astrophotography with a star tracker and good optics - images where objects in the night sky are of interest.

Later Sony cameras have a milder star eater issue (which actually is spatial filtering removing hot pixels, a very helpful feature in almost every respect - unless wanting to capture the faintest stars faithfully - the star eater issue does NOT affect brighter stars in the frame, only the very faintest ones).

Sony A7III and a tracked exposure:

Nice Ha response for a non-modded camera.

Lens and total exposure?
