I recently received a Canon SX 70 HS for my Birthday. I live in North Dakota which has severe temperature and weather changes. It frequently gets down to -30 deg in the winter and over +90 deg in the summer. Can you tell me what temperatures can be harmful to the camera especially cold temperatures.

This was copied from a sx40 manual-i don't suppose things have changed.

Avoid using, placing or storing the product in the following places:
- Places subject to strong sunlight
- Places subject to temperatures above 40 °C (104 °F)
- Humid or dusty areas

These could cause leakage, overheating or an explosion of the battery, resulting in
electrical shock, fire, burns or other injuries.
High temperatures may cause deformation of the camera or battery charger casing.

Love North Dakota.
I took my SX40HS there in the summer (90F), no problems.

In the winter, keep your SX70 close to your body and it will stay warm :) Don't let it freeze in the car.

-30 in the winter?...More harmful to the photographer than the camera. :-)

I used to live in Manitoba so we had the same temps. When I took my Canon 30D out in the cold winter nights, the battery life was much shorter. Batteries will suffer this apparently as the chemical reactions are slowed by colder temperatures which will knock down their overall energy delivery.

You can get around that by putting the battery inside your coat to keep it closer to body temp. Otherwise, I didnt notice any adverse impacts from the LCD. The 30D has different exterior construction to the Sx70 however which is more plastic and has a motorized zoom. The lubricants for internal mechanisms may slow due to low temps. Not sure of material brittleness.

What can be detrimental is going from temperature extremes which will cause condensation. The body that has been freezing outside brought into warm inside air will cause localized cooling and a loss of water vapour carrying capacity. That will look like dew on the body, evf, even on exterior, interior of lens. Repeatedly doing this may contribute to moisture damage such as corrosion, mold and mildew, sticking. Getting around this requires some patience and planning. If you put a volume of cold air around the camera before you come in, that volume will ****** the temperature change enough to lessen or prevent the condensation. This can be done in a large ziplock although in a pinch I have just left the camera in a large camera bag for 30 mins.

We spent a week in Yellowstone last Feb, with temps as low as minus 30. I kept my camera in a pocket of my down parka, and had no trouble taking pictures. As another person mentioned, if the camera battery gets really cold, the battery may not work well. The more important worry used to be taking a really cold camera back inside, and experiencing condensation on the lens, or even within the lens. I've never experienced that myself.

When I lived in those extreme temperatures, I would always have a plastic bags in my pocket. Before coming inside, I would put the camera and lenses in a bag and tie them shut and leave there until it warmed up. This would prevent condensation forming in the equipment. I also did this with my field glasses.
