This is a basic question:

What is the best way to transfer *.CR3 from an sd card under windows?

I want a small/light programme that opens with autoload, can specify the target directory, and can rename both jpeg and *.CR3 files according to the date/time and user-specified string.

I don't have lightroom etc, and I cannot find a sensible way of doing this with canon DPP. Also, I do not want to open a large piece of software just for this.

I previously used ImageBrowser Ex, but it doesn't seem to recognize *.CR3 files. Also, it claims not to be available for the combination of EOS R and Windows 10.

I had assumed that the "Transfer Utility" should do this, but it doesn't seem to look at cards, only connect to cameras.

Answers to the above would be very welcome!

I have been using Breeze Systems Downloader Pro for weddings

downloads and renames to date/time, which was great for multi-camera wedding days

I have not tried it for .cr3, but their site says version 2.5 added cr3

There might be nuances in the question that I don't quite get or understand, but my way of transferring CR3 and JPG files from SD card to a place on my hard drive is quite simple.

I always use the Windows File Explorer window to browse and copy files.

As the SD card is inserted into the Card Reader, a new File Explorer window is automatically opened. I navigate down to the DCIM\100EOS_R folder, select/highlight 100EOS_R, right mouse click, select Copy menu option. Navigate to the destination folder on my hard drive, right mouse click, paste. After copying is done, I rename 100EOS_R to a descriptive name, usually with a date and an event.

If I want to rename the image files themselves, which I rarely do, I use the small and handy program Bulk Rename Utility.

Does that sound OK to you?

+1

I may have missed something as well, but I was thinking USB3 card reader, File Explorer (or Apple equivalent if using a Mac), get them on computer, and then use whatever software you like.

Seems easy enough ?

I do this:

Put card in USB reader.

Drag Directory with images to desktop.

Re name directory.

Put Re named directory where ever you store your image files.

Import into Lightroom.

You might also consider :

1. Assign a dedicated folder (e.g. 'from camera') to import images to the right mouse button menue in the Windows Explorer -> ** Send to **. By doing so, there is only one click to copy folders from the sd DCIM structure to the PC. Then move and rename the imported folder.

2. XnView is a free software which I find has a very powerful renaming tool.
