I went out yesterday with my mate and his two young granddaughters. I took my Panny G80, and I also took along my two old EX1s for the girls to use.

Imagine my shock when I looked at the pictures from all three cameras on my monitor last night, and found that in some cases, the IQ from the EX1s equalled, or slightly bettered what I had got from the G80.

I can't post samples as they include the young girls, but perhaps I should also be carrying one of the EX1s with me when I go out for a shoot.

I will say that it is very rewarding to see the EX1s still used and enjoyed by the girls, particularly the older one who is nine and has a very good eye for a picture. She is not afraid to experiment either as you can see.

When our youngest was 9 she was exactly as you describe above (thank you). Around age 14, at her request and pace, I taught her the 'exposure triangle' (great fun).

Thereafter I was learning about an important part of her inner personality that can only be exposed when studying her photos in private, discussing in person. As a father, this is absolutely priceless. And of course, none of this has anything to do with 'the gear'.

She became a Marine Biologist, works for NOAA.gov, specializes in Mammal Marine Life across the planet, and NOAA has great gear (as one would expect).

Very Best Regards,
Tu Vu

-That's a good point. I guess that our pictures do say something about ourselves. I will be observing the young lady's pictures with a slightly different eye from now on.

Granted, there are many variables involved with camera equipment (and images) that punch far above their weight performance-wise. But as an EX2 user myself, I was (still am) amazed at the IQ output that this camera (along with the EX1) can generate. It's uncanny really and one has to give Samsung credit for producing cameras - that although never really caught on with the masses- showed what they could do technology-wise. I'll say it over and over again - one can only wonder what Samsung would have produced had they stayed in the camera market.

I'm still using my EX1 as simply put, it's better than me. Every time I consider upgrading I head out, take some pictures, enjoy editing them and then get reminded that it's the process that rewards me not so much the tool. I'll probably stick with mine until it breaks as it's a very capable amateur tool.

I'm getting ready to list a bunch of gear on the big auction site and took pictures of the gear yesterday. One of the items I was going to list was my very lightly used EX1/tl500. After reading this I might just put it back in the cabinet for now. I had two, but sold the other one about a year or so ago. I do love the lens and the build of the camera is really first rate. It's just about the perfect carry pocket style camera. I don't think Leica could have done any better. I thought about getting an EX2 at one time, but didn't see where I'd gain much over the EX1. Hmm, decisions and more decisions. It might just be worth hanging onto????? JohnW
