B&H is closed at the moment, but sometime in the next 36 hours, I plan to order my new RX10M4!!! I already have batteries and SDXC cards left over from owning the RXM3. It comes with a “free” case. I will get the extra warranty.

I’m wondering which screen protector and UV filter you recommend. Also, do you know where to order a two-battery charger? (I hear there are also three-battery chargers, but want one that will pack easily.) Is there a not-very-expensive remote control you recommend? Do you think a remote control is an important thing for a newby? Considering I’m on a budget, are there anything else you recommend I consider?

As always, thank you for your time and consideration!

I had purchased an inexpensive Vivitar UV filter for my RX10iii as I always used one as protection. I was a little disappointed in my IQ as I thought it should be better. So I ran some tests and discovered the inexpensive UV filter was degrading my IQ. I removed the UV filter. I now rely on my lens hood to protect the lens. I have had no problems through 2 years with the RX10iii and a year with the RX10iv.

Use of a UV filter as protection is split pretty evenly between believers and nay-sayers. You will hear arguments both ways.

I for one, have gone UV filterless and I have not looked back. If you do decide to use a UV filter, buy a high quality one, and I would still encourage doing an on/off comparison to see if you can see any adverse effects.

Now I would suggest occasional use of a CPL filter to reduce reflections and a ND filter for those milky waterfall shots.

My circular polarizer was really killing most of my low light shots (shutter speed wasn't high enough) and I was getting too much blur.

I removed it also and will only use it for when the situation calls for it.

Hi Mary...

I used this remote

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LLTZBU8/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

with my previously owned RX10m3 and now use it with my RX10m4. The only negative thing I'd mention is that the instruction sheet is somewhat hard to understand.... or, maybe it's just my "thick-headedness" that required me to read it a few times to get things working correctly. :-D

Yes, protection is my reason for using UV filters. But, there’s such a broad range . . .

on my M3 the lens hood cast a shadow on the subject when I used the flash

i understand what you’re saying. However, it’d be just my luck to get a scratch.

probably so!

How about just a clear glass protector? Does that exist?
Now I would suggest occasional use of a CPL filter to reduce reflections and a ND filter for those milky waterfall shots.
I will look those up.

Thanks, Jerry

Thanks, Lynn! I’ll check it out.

Interesting! I can imagine it being too dark.

You can remove the hood, take your picture and replace the hood when done.

A good quality filter should have a minimum effect. There was an article a few years ago evaluating lots of different filters. There was a slight degradation in contrast with all of them. The choice to use or not use a filter is yours.

Basically the UV filter is clear glass . It, theoretically, blocks wavelengths of light above what you can see, and most digital cameras are not sensitive to. This is left over from film days when film would be affected by UV light.
Now I would suggest occasional use of a CPL filter to reduce reflections and a ND filter for those milky waterfall shots.
I will look those up.

I am one of those who doesn't believe in using a UV filter & have never used one on any of my cameras. Sony know plenty about designing cameras & feel they have provided a rugged enough LCD so I also don't see any reason for using a screen protector.

Multi coated clear protective filter for the lens you don't need a UV filter for anything digital camera but either way multi coated. B&W, Hoya, Nikon, Watson duel charger,

Not sure why you need a extra warranty for the camera that is wasted money when there is a good chance and I will assume you are in the USA that your home owners policy already covers personal property or call your insurance company and see if they will write a rider for camera gear. Unless you have used camera extended warranties in the past or you think you will drop this on day 2 save it for other stuff

Good point, Len. We are probably already covered! I’ll check.

When do you now use a circular polarizer?

I will look those up.
