After dismantling my old Russian 1080/10.5 lens and reseating the main mirror, I had another go at a basic shot of the moon with the RP (unguided and with a modest tripod)

Purely a 'have a go' shot, it's definitely sharper than before, although the atmosphere was turbulent enough that this is the sharpest of some 20 or so shots

This is a cropped shot from the frame, processed in CS6 (using DNG converter) and sharpened with Sharpen AI and then Nik Sharpener Pro for visual appeal rather than accuracy (the Moon is quite low contrast)

Not intended to be a 'best' shot of the moon but fun to do,

The flip out screen and focus peaking made focusing a lot easier - enough to see the rapid changes in seeing, even with the moon at a good altitude.

Great shot! Now we need to see a picture of that lens!

Haha, you're right, the camera is attached to the lens!
Thanks for sharing, that's an interesting setup you got there, and I'm a little surprised how compact the 1080mm lens is. Or am I misunderstanding the 1080/10.5 designation?

it's a mirror lens, one mirror at the back, with a hole in the middle and a secondary mirror at the back of the front element.

Catadioptric lenses like this fold the optical path to shorten it.

They were quite popular a while ago, but have a serious bokeh problem for many people, since OOF highlights show a characteristic 'Donut' look to them.

A search for 'mirror lens' on eBay will find plenty - mostly shorter FL than this.

The design of this one goes back to a post war astrographic design IIRC. I do have in a box somewhere, a Celestron 8" F10 (~2000mm F10), and a Canon adapter - time perhaps to fish that out :-)
