Interesting video by Manny Ortiz. This isnt about banding in artificial light.

Yes, this is known since three years at least.

It is due to that there actually is a change in distance between the EFCS (Electronic First Curtain Shutter) that travels directly on the sensor plane and the mechanical rear shutter curtain that travels some millimeters in front of the sensor. When these form a slit at higher shutter speed this distance difference causes this effect, mostly at large aperture openings.

See the below link for details.
The whole forum thread in the link has many good pieces about this phenomenon.

Also bokeh balls can be out of shape when using EFCS at high shutter speeds and shallow DOF. And thirdly HSS flash does not work well with it at times, banding can occur, especially with non Sony brands it seems. So three reasons to not use EFCS at high shutter speeds.

It is unfortunate tough in the video that it is called electronic shutter as having the problem. It hasn't.

It is only EFCS, the electronic front curtain that has it. So using the full electronic shutter, sometimes called silent shutter, on an A7 or A9 camera should not produce this effect.

Interesting video by Manny Ortiz.
Aside from that being old news - going back to 2011 with Sony cameras, for example - he's using the wrong terminology throughout the video.

The problem described is with the Electronic Front Curtain Shutter, commonly called EFCS, which uses an electronic shutter to start the exposure and a mechanical shutter to end it. That 'hybrid' approach is the actual cause of the problem.

The term electronic shutter typically refers to a fully electronic shutter, which does not have the problem described in the video. A fully electronic shutter has other problems.

Nothing new or surprising! This is mentioned in the Help Guide for the new Sony cameras.

For those who want to learn about the different shutter settings, the User Guide and Help Guide is a good start! :-)
Why would any good person with internet access and a keyboard think of doing such a thing? :D

Sure! Just the few that actually read the instructions for their camera already know this and some other secrets! :-D

  • When you shoot at high shutter speeds with a large-aperture lens attached, out-of-focus circle produced by the bokeh effect may get cut off because of the shutter mechanism. If this happens, set [e-Front Curtain Shut.] to [Off].
  • When a lens made by another manufacturer (including a Minolta/Konica-Minolta lens) is used, set this function to [Off]. If you set this function to [On], the correct exposure will not be set or the image brightness will be uneven.
  • When you shoot at high shutter speeds, the image brightness may become uneven depending on the shooting environment. In such cases, set [e-Front Curtain Shut.] to [Off].

Also the problem is not with the electronic shutter, but with the electronic first curtain shutter. Two different things

In case it wasn't clear, I was totally joking.

And I was responding to a person that was joking! I found your answer funny! :-D
