Glueing the back rubber cladding of A7ii hand grip

Hi

Is there a better way to glueing one of the back pieces of rubber cladding of an A7ii hand grip?

Mine has been coming unglued and after the last glueing, my regular camera tech has advised to have it replaced as sweat has already damaged the rubber piece and more glueing will not work.

I was at the Sony Service Centre in Singapore this evening. I was quoted USD85 for labour and USD110-150 for the replacement part, total USD195-235 for a simple cosmetic repair, which I think is quite excessive.

Other better alternatives to fix this will be very much appreciated.

Not sure about the a7, but when I restored a Nikon D200, all the rubber was held on with double sided tape. The tape was supplied with the replacement parts, so I don't know a source, but it had a tissue type base. Photo mounting tape should work. I think it's called transfer tape. Transfer tape is not easy to work with, cause it's really, really sticky & there is no base layer. To apply, you pull off the paper & it basically leaves the adhesive. I would remove the whole piece trying not to stretch it. Clean all old adhesive off & then apply the new tape. Good luck.

The techs at LensProToGo recommended a particular brand of gel-type super-glue, Loctite, available in most hardware stores, Home Depot etc.

I used it on my A7 and A7II for the rubber that comes loose around the SD card access area. Works well.

In either case, the rubber appears to come pre-glued to the part from the factory.

Managed to get Sony Singapore to respond by writing to them and through the Sony Shooters Singapore FB page.

Good news is that the part costs about USD29 and labour of USD94, total USD123 including tax, which seems reasonable. Turnaround time - first email said that parts will be available in 1-2 weeks, and urgent service can be 3 days, depending on work load. Then another email said that it is minimum 2 weeks as they have to order the parts.

Altho not a pro, I have been shooting a few times a week. Sending in for 2-3 weeks will be a real hassle.

Canon turnaround is as quick as 3 days for a compact!! Sony has a long way to go if they want pros to be using their equipment. But at least my experience with Sony Singapore so far seems better than some of the horror story I've read elsewhere.

Take-away here is that Sony may have great cameras but their finishing is not very durable, and turnaround time is too long. If I rely on photography for a living, Sony won't be the first choice, for sure.

Will update after I send in my camera.

It's been glued a couple of times by my regular camera tech. Told me that glue no longer works as rubber has deteriorated, and needs replacement.

See my other post on my experiences with Sony Singapore, so far. Not great but also not so bad. Will have to send in the camera and see how the actual experience is. Thanks.

The Loctite superglue has held for 3 years on my A7 and almost 2 on my A7II. Yes, you may have to trim the stretched rubber with an Xacto knife - but that beats send the camera away.
Many thanks. Let me go give this a try. Haven't seen Loctite superglue in the hardware stores but will go look around.
 
I were going to reglue this, instead of replacing the whole part, I would use something like Pliobond contact cement. It works well on rubber and plastic, doesn't get brittle like super glue, and is quite resistant to pretty much everything once it has cured.

Thank you all for the suggestions. The rubber strip has been re-glued a few times already. After the last re-glue, his advice was to get it replaced. Also, I could not find the Loctite superglue here in Singapore and I'm pretty hopeless with fixing anything small.

A few weeks ago, I had asked the counter staff at Sony Service Center for estimates and was given a USD110-150 estimate for the part. Following emails and FB messages, Sony Singapore came back with USD29 for the part, which is reasonable and service of USD95. But 2-3 weeks lead time.

This morning, I decided to send it in. Pleasant surprise was estimated turnaround in 3-5 working days. Now that's real good. Will keep all updated. Thanks again.

No screws where I glued mine - but good thinking. Unfortunately, Sony is likely to replace the loose rubber with rubber using the same poor adhesive.
According to Sony Singapore, they will be replacing the whole back piece which was described as 'back cover hand grip'.

In all fairness, this is not only a Sony issue. I had to replace the rubber on my Nikon D700 for the same reasons.
 
Final update: Sony Singapore did a great job. Total cost to replace the A7II back assembly and eye cup + general cleaning of my GM24-70 lens + tax + USD160. Turnaround time - 3 working days - sent in on Friday 10 August about 3pm, got it back today 15 August 6pm. Canon Singapore is still better but Sony is now very close. If I was a working pro, I would use the Sony.
