Hello all, This is my first post on here but have been reading a learning as much as I can. I am planning a trip to the Canyonlands in the fall of 2018 so I purchased a Nikon D5600 because I wanted something better than my phone.

This is my first true DSLR, I have had a Fuji “bridge” camera in the past so I got familiar with the manual settings as much as I could.

My issue with the D5600 is that I was used to a single square to focus (that turned green when in focus) on when I push the shutter button half way down, but on the D5600 there are multiple focal points.

But on the live view there is still just one square and it turns green when in focus. I would like to be able to get it back to a single box through the viewfinder.

I am sure it is something that I switched and didn’t realize. I am using the kit lenses for now, 18-55 and the 70-300 non VR for now until I can learn more about the camera.

I shoot mainly landscapes and wildlife.

I am sure this is one of many question I will have but any help is greatly appreciated. Love this site and have learned so much already.

Thanks!

It sounds like you want to set Single Point as the Auto-focus Area Mode. If that's the case press the "i" button, highlight the Auto-focus Area Mode and change it to Single Point.

See page 87 of the D5600 User Manual.

Are you aware that the camera uses to fundamentally different focusing methods, depending on how you use the viewfinder?

In live view it's CDAF, when you shoot through the viewfinder it's PDAF.

You may want to read the review of the camera here to get a better understanding of the different focusing methods and modes.

Good luck and good light.
