I was curious if there are any photographers here with visible tattoos that can't easily be hidden easily(neck, hands, and face). Whether you do freelance, portraits, commercial, weddings or photojournalistic work. I was wondering how it affects your business

I got a large one on my face right above my right eye and gonna get it redone and get the second side done too and on my chin.

I don't make money from photography but where I'm in my life who care what others think and hasn't hurt my normal business or life in any way.

Tattoos are a sign of individuality and customers/clients all want someone who’s original therefore going to produce original pieces or work. I can only imagine people with lots of tattoos getting more work. You could test this theory out yourself and report back to the community.

To each his own.....but I cannot understand the present graze about these tattoos :-(......

Sooner or later, like nose piercings etc this will have passed too, and but people are stuck with their tattoos, or need to them removed, probably costly and painful.......

Also how will the tattoos look on their body, when these persons are old and have wrinkled skin ?

I also read several times, that the ink used for these tattoos is seeping into the body......

Griddi......

Well when I'm old I'm going to care even less. As for the ink its probably 1000% safer than all the other chemicals we touch and breathe every day including micro plastics in water. Oh yah I also have stretches ear lobes.

As already mentioned " to each his own " but why do you have these tattoos , stretched earlobes ? Just to appear " arty " " standing out " etc......?

I agree with the other chemicals, but you adding even more to your body with the ink of for the tattoos........

Griddi.......

Why not? Just improving on nature.

Tattoos are a sign of individuality
While tattoos can be signs of individuality, I'd suggest that most tattoos are not. Instead they are a manifestation of conformity to a non -mainstream fashion, as are certain haircuts and clothing styles.
and customers/clients all want someone who’s original therefore going to produce original pieces or work.
That's clearly not true. A lot of customers want conventional-looking output. Most photography done for businesses is conventional.
I can only imagine people with lots of tattoos getting more work. You could test this theory out yourself and report back to the community.
Most of the commercially successful photographers in the region where I live do not have visible tattoos. I doubt there is much of a causal relationship between their lack of visible tattoos and their success, Rather it has to do with having become established in the field long enough ago that they were past the typical tattoo-getting age by the time tattoos became more fashionable in the artsy crowd.

This is an interesting question.

Assuming interesting, rather than rubbish tattoos, then:

I expect for some jobs they'll be a detriment. eg: corporate headshot jobs for professional firms, private school class photos, etc.

For other jobs they'll be an advantage: Sports, performances, creative style work.

For other jobs they'll be neutral: eg: some scientific photography - nobody will care what you look like.

However, there's also likely to be a bit of self selection involved. eg: If you fit in with a culture that doesn't disapprove of the tattoos, then you're also likely to be mixing in groups and picking up work for which the tattoos are an advantage. Likewise, if you don't like the corporate, professional, suit wearing environment, then you aren't likely to be networking with that group and pursuing work there anyway.

Final answer, it's complicated, and depends on scenario, but I'd guess it's not likely to be a huge problem.

No, on the other side of the continent past the 49th.

I have a full body tattoo. It's of me, but a foot taller

Well, no. Some of it is carcinogenic. The problem is that ink isn't regulated in very many places, so one isn't necessarily sure what is in the ink. My tattooer is cautious about the inks he uses, one reason I chose him to do mine.

It is going to depend on one's clients, type of photography and method of engagement. For younger and more arty markets, they could easily be a plus.

I have a few visible tattoos.... but since I do fine art photography, whenever, and however I want, and NEVER do contracted work, no, it never affects me. Now if somebody wouldn't buy one of my prints at a show or something because they saw I had tattoos, wow ! Okay :) lol

I like art of all kinds. I guess some people don't.

Of course we all strive for excellence in all we do as photographers, but it’s a business. People have to like you, feel comfortable around you, trust you.

Your tattoos can convey a sense of creativity and energy which customers will love. I think they’re a part of a larger you.
