I have three Flex TT5's, and I'm wondering about the compatibility with the new D850.

Latest firmware for PW's came out in June, for the D7500. I'm assuming the PW's won't work with the D850 until a firmware update comes out?

I'm supposed to get my D850 tonight and I will test this out. In the past, "some" functions have usually worked with the FlexTT5 and "unsupported" bodies. It has depended on the body itself as to what works and what doesn't. From my experience, manual power level settings at or below the cross-sync speed generally work fine but things like TTL, FP sync, and VR lenses with VR turned on did not always work with unsupported cameras.

My pocket wizard Mini TT1 and TT5’s work fine with the Nikon D850, but HSS is not supported with the latest firmware 3.906 (aug 24th 2017). Results are good with shutterspeeds up to 1/250 sec. They are acceptable up to 1/500 sec. Banding occurs with shutterspeeds above 1/500 sec. Hopefully there will be a firmware update anytime soon!

I contacted them last week and they’re working on it!

They said

”Thank you for contacting us. We are currently working on a firmware update for the D850 and it is one of our top priorities. Unfortunately, due to the nature of firmware testing and development, it is impossible to give an exact date, but we are working hard on it and hope to have it available soon.

Please keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for a firmware announcement.

If you have any further questions, please let me know!”

cheers

Steve

Good news! Can’t wait!

I wonder why it is taking so long for Pocket Wizard to finish the firmware update for the new NIkon D850. Adobe updated Lightroom to recognize D850 raw files before the camera was even released and Photoshop updates followed shortly thereafter.

When making an inquiry you get a canned response from Pocket Wizard telling you they're working on it but can't say when they'll be finished!

Very disappointing...

Hi, I was approached by Pocket Wizard this evening and asked to participate in the Alpha testing as well. Possibly a classic case of "if you can't beat them, join them"?

Thanks for your response.

Dec 9, 2017 - No Pocket Wizard support for D850 yet, even in beta firmware.

On Dec 4th I have received the following reply from Pocket Wizard: Thank you for your email. We are working on it and are close but unfortunately have run into a couple hiccups. We will announce the availability of beta versions and official firmware releases via our Facebook page and Twitter feed as well as on PocketWizard.com.

The Beta version has been released for the Nikon D850... Finally!!!

Hi,

I've been trying TT5's with the beta version 3.907 on my D850. Using the AC3 I can control remote light manually but when set to auto the flashes consistent fire on full power. I've reported this as a bug which they've acknowledge, but still no sign of a fix.

Is anyone else having any more luck with these?

Cheers

Rod

I tested it earlier and couldnt make it flash at full power unless I set it that way. Mine has been working great.

Pocket Wizard have acknowledged there's an issue withe the beta tt5 code and current D850 firmware. If you're lucky enough to have a working combination can you share the firmware versions you're using?

Pocket Wizard have just released Beta 3.909 code for UK TT5s only.
I'll be trying it out with my D850 and SB800s during the coming week.

Fingers crossed!
