Canon 6D HDR vs. Other Full-Frame SLRs

I am wondering if anyone can educate/clarify a question I've been having about the 6D's in-camera HDR setting.

I find that the in-camera results for HDR to be garbage in my opinion. I am coming from the EOS SL1, and am used to having 3 separate exposures of the image that I can edit and merge into an HDR image. I am wondering if there is a way to disable the in-camera default to blend the images in-camera, and get my normal 3 exposures back. I seen the setting in camera to turn HDR off/on, but I'm not sure if that actually works, because if I go into special scene mode, and take an HDR picture; I still hear the camera take the 3 frames. Also, I am wondering if that is just a feature that just doesn't exist in a Canon Full-Frame cameras? and is only in APS-C cameras.

The HDR feature is not what you want to use in your case. You need to be bracketing

Bracketing

I've tried that setting, and I am still only getting one final image. I must be missing something, or the camera can't take separate exposures without combining them in camera.

Take your three bracketed exposures and blend them in something like Photomatix. Then you have complete control over the final image.

Then you're doing something wrong. AEB does not result in one combined image; it brackets the shot according to how you tell it to bracket and you will have 3 bracketed images that you can combine yourself in PP software.

I'm so dumb, I just figured out what the single/continuous setting meant. I wasn't holding down the shutter button when taking my pictures.

I don't think you're dumb. I've got 3 Canon bodies (6D, 5Dsr, 5Div) and I find the damn menu is too large and cumbersome. I wish Canon would figure out some way to enable the user to delete specific menu lines or even whole pages if the user wishes. For example, I absolutely never use the blue "Protect Images" or the "Resize" pages. Being able to streamline the menu would not only save time, but also aid in remembering the menu items that are still left.

So I figured out how to do AEB, and was able to take a few shots with the various exposure settings, but I am now noticing that my 6D is no longer allowing me to take the 3 different exposure shots. I've done a full camera reset, when I go back into the menu to enable multiple exposure, and go in and set my exposure values; then go to take a picture. I hear the camera take three shots when I have it set to continuous shooting mode, but when I go to review my image, there is only one shot showing up. I'm not sure how to reset the settings, or if I'm doing something wrong again. I've tried shooting in M, AV, and neither mode seems to work for me anymore.

Sounds like you are back in HDR mode (3 shots combined for one image) and not bracketing exposure (3 separate images generated). Check your shooting mode and reference the manual. Good luck

This issue is driving me nuts!

I've followed the Canon manual verbatim as far as activating AEB, and I've used all shooting modes. No matter what setting I choose, I can not get my 6D to take a successful set of exposures for HDR anymore.

I was able to take some images a few days ago. I've done a full factory reset of my camera, and tried to activate AEB but still with no luck. I'm not sure what/if anything I am doing wrong. I'm not a total NOOB when it comes to navigating the camera menus and understanding basic photography concepts, but I can't stop wondering why all of a sudden my camera won't take the proper 3 exposures of images. Someone please HELP!! :)

I've come to the conclusion that my camera is possessed or something. I've reset my camera about 4 or so times, and now my AEB seems to be working again. I've tried all the settings, and various lenses too. Everything seems to be o.k for now lol.

Are you sure you are not in HDR mode as outlined on page 155 in the manual?

... see bottom of page 155 in the 6D manual - internal HDR is done in JPEG and ONLY the final image is saved .

Your assessment is correct Canon HDR is eerily similar to crayon work or cheeseball schticks.

No worries - best to work in RAW anyway , just set the custom fx to a bracket as other's say and you can bring out or dampen any part of an image - ie - indoor windows looking out etc .

Set image set to RAW only,

Now in M or AV mode, set image record to RAW only,When you set the AEB bracket & exposure custom fx [C.13, p.305 in the 6D manual] to say 3 shots per bracket , set the exposure range on the Quick menu as desired, click set, hold the shutter down - does it not take 3 consecutive shots with the exposures you set? You have to set DRIVE MODE to Continuous NOT single shot to do them all in 1 sequence , with 1 press.

or download https://www.google.com/nikcollection/ and work all RAW files and HDR in a zillion ways until you drop.

Sorry mate, I am confused here, are you going to take Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) or Multiple Exposure? These are two difference function.

1. AEB is for taking 3 different image at different exposure. (+x, 0, -x). Which can be manually put together as a single HDR image by software.

2. Multiple Exposure is repeatedly expose and form into one single image.

If manual HDR is your ultimate goal. Then don't fiddle with Multiple Exposure, it is not what you're after.

Happy shooting.

I would just like to know if the quality of the built-in HDR shots of 5D MkIII & 6D MkII are the same or is there any differences in the overall quality or DR of the photos between the two cameras.
Any help will be appreciated.

Regards.

Your question has very little to do with this year-old+ thread.
