I am getting myself all confused trying to work this out........I want try some RAW photo processing, but can't import them into iPhoto. I get a message saying they are unreadable files.

* I am using 10.9.5 on a iMac desktop.

* I import all my photos into iPhoto, then drag/drop into Photoshop Elements 14 only the ones I want to edit (Jpegs)

I use Canon 1D4, 1DX, and 1D2 at different times. I also have a 7D2.

*I have opened Jpegs in Camera Raw within PE14 and used the sliders etc with ok results, but want to start on RAW files

What do I need to do? Do I need to upgrade the operating system to get the RAW files imported? I am not interested in Lightroom as yet as I have only shot Jpegs and this works for me.....I just want to experiment with some RAW files before going out of my comfort zone too much for now!

You need to update to a later OS

As already noted, you are probably too far behind in system software. Apple supplies raw support as part of its system software; you need to search on their website to find when it began supporting the cameras you use. https://support.apple.com/downloads/aperture

Or use something that can run on that old system that supports that Nikon raw, like the software that came with your camera. Or maybe one of Adobe's products, if you can find something that will run on the old stuff. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/release-note/update.html

Note that I don't believe you can drag and drop a RAW from iPhoto to PE, only a JPEG. But it's been a long time since I used either. Good luck.

Apple's raw-supporting DAM/raw converters (iPhoto & Aperture) occasionally throw up this message for usually no discernible reason and with no real solution (except if the specific camera model is not supported, which in your case would only apply to raw files from your 7D II, see below).

The usual incantations have sometimes worked: reboot, re-install the latest OS update (preferably the combo version), re-install the OS (on top of the existing installation, won't change all your user files and settings), update OS. It is of course possible that the actual raw file has been damaged, by the original memory card, the card reader or other events. If you are in a curious mood, you get the free DNG Converter from Adobe, convert one of the non-working raw files to DNG and see if iPhoto will open the DNG (that's another one of those incantations).

The last Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update, 5.07, for Mavericks (aka 10.9.x) does seem to support the Canon 1D IV, 1D X but not the 7D II (even the original Mavericks aka 10.9.0, seems to support the first two cameras). Raws from the 7D II have been supported from Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 6.01 onwards, which requires Yosemite (10.10) or newer.
What do I need to do? Do I need to upgrade the operating system to get the RAW files imported?
For the 7D II, yes. For the 1D IV & 1D X, it shouldn't be necessary but 'should' is not a guarantee.

You probably want to set up photoshop as an external editor.

Drag & drop exports a reduced resolution jpeg into the 'drop' target. The external editor feature sends the master file for the image to the external editor. [I think if you have done iPhoto adjustments to a raw file, the external editor receives full size tiff file, with the iPhoto adjustments baked in]

I ran into the same problem with iPhoto which was aggravated by know-it-alls at the Apple store who had no clue what a "RAW" file is, but wasted a lot of my time anyway giving me contradictory, useless advice. Why not simplify your world and do everything in Adobe software (Photoshop, Bridge, Camera RAW, and LightRoom) instead of jumping between iPhoto and Adobe? You will save yourself a lot of hassle and get better images. iPhoto is limited, decrepit, dysfunctional, and only works on certain Apple platforms. Adobe has software for both Apple and Windows operating systems, and the files work across operating systems and hardware platforms--no headaches.

Why don't I change over? Simple. I do horse photography. At some events I can have 1-2K photos per day to load on to my website. iPhoto is easy, I use it as a storage library........crop and export at 600px to my website....... and only edit those photos that are purchased. Plus each file or photo number can be displayed under each photo, making it easy to find when ordered. My clients like photos to look like a photo, not an over processed artwork. Any simple editing I need to do can all be done in PSE14. This has worked for me for 8 years now........
