Canon's lame offerings grab 18% mirrorless share in Japan, Panasonic tanks

I'm a Canon and Oly user - Canon mirrored and Oly mirrorless. I have never found Canon's M series cameras very compelling. Perhaps Canon's name recognition with the average consumer is what's getting them their sales. For one thing, never in my life have I seen a television commercial advertising Olympus cameras. Yet I have seen Canon ads. If you were to ask the average person under the age of 40 in the U.S. if Canon makes cameras, most would say yes. If you asked the same person if Olympus makes cameras, I suspect a large portion would say, "What's Olympus?".

Lame? With lame these results. Cannot even imagine with the EOS M5 it will be what :-P

Back when Japan's BCN sales ranking was always open to the public, the best selling Olympus mirrorless camera in Japan was their PEN Lite. Talk about lame. :-)

No surprise. Despite their horrific decline in recent years, P&S sized cameras still sell most.

That was a 2011 model?

It is useful looking at the way Thom Hogan presented the limited available numbers. It is reasonable to assume that the companies in the #4 and 5 spots are close behind #3

So Olympus loosing 8% is the bigger news, even bigger than the 5% win for Canon

I have seen some in Canada. I have seen this one, but without the NJ camera store banner (of course) but can't find the original on YouTube:

The Olympus Party ad:

In addition I have seen this billboard in downtown Toronto a few years ago:

Be eternally grateful you never saw an Olympus commercial.

Wow, those Olympus commercials were pretty bad. The one with the little boy with red eyes was a bit creepy.
You guys are crazy--those are some of the best ads I've ever seen! I also appreciated Mr. MacLeod's conclusion, "I can say personally that having watched the ads has influenced my photography habits. I am less content with blurry images, red eyes, out of proportion hands and feet and truncated people. I’ve bought myself a better camera and take more care in the planning of shots. I’m also less sentimental about keeping bad photos."
