So I need to share this. While transfer is not really fast, it works flawlessly. At home or on location.

I connect camera to WD disk, WD can also connect to another WiFi that has access to internet. I can transfer files through FTP as I shoot, or select and transfer, as WD has a FTP server. It is amazing.

Only one thing was bothering me. I could back up the SD Card from camera directly onto the disk, with no WiFi, but no CF card. So I tried numerous solutions to solve this and pretty much none worked. WD disk accepts a USB 2.0 device and it can auto backup its content, but it won't recognize numerous CF card readers I tried. Until I found one that worked: Lexar Professional Workflow CFR1 .

Yes, slow but it works. Copies the new content from the card on internal disk.

So if anyone interested for a cheap WiFi and SD/CF card backup solution, this might be it.

Did you have any problems trying to transfer the files? I keep getting Err46 and I have no idea what to do next.

Keep getting that error doing what exactly?

Thanks for sharing this info.

I am in the market for something to backup images I take when traveling. I previously brought my laptop + a portable HD to back up images. However, it is just too many things to keep track. It is also a hassle to bring them on airplanes.

W/ this WD, there is no need to bring a laptop, right? What is the capacity of this drive? 2T?

Are there issues w/ making a backup of CF cards when using the card reader you mentioned? I shoot raw. How do I know that files are transferred w/o issues?

Thanks.

There is a companion iOS app for iPhone/iPad (not sure about Android) that lets you see what is on the Passport.

I use this CF card reader:

When transfer completes the blue light stops flashing.

I'm able to connect to the hard drive with ease however, when the image (RAW or JPEG) is trying to transfer, it tends to get stuck. When I go back into the Communication settings, I get the following screen:

5678429441004b7fbc81e4c24da223e1.jpg

It's an Err43 message. From the 5D4 user manual, it's asking me to disconnect some devices from the hard drive:

The only thing that is connected to the hard drive is my MacBook Pro. The hard drive is also connected to my internet. Have you run into this issue?

No, I have not ran into any issues. Seems to be a FTP server configuration error. You are the one running the FTP?

Well, the 4 blue leds are blinking as the backup progresses and when it finishes they will stay lit when all ok and will go off after some more time. If something goes wrong all will blink in sync like crazy. You should know. And yes, you do not need to bring a laptop and you can see JPEGs with iOS or Android apps. No, you cannot see RAW but, I shoot RAW + JPEG and check before erasing anything.

Yes, I am the one running the FPT. I just received the hard drive yesterday and my laptop is connected thru WiFi, but not with FTP. Other than following the instructions within the 5D4 and hard drive user manual, was there anything else you had to do?

Also, did you change anything within your Network Settings on the hard drive? DHCP vs Static? WiFi Inactivity Disable, etc?

Thanks PliciPlici

PliciPlici is correct. You can't view the RAW files but you will see a file if it transferred. You just won't know if it got corrupted during transfer. I never had that happen.

So, after several more attempts, I got everything working! I missed a step by making sure to point the Target Folder to /Storage within the 5D Mark IV. It's an awesome set-up so far! I'll report back with any wins and losses.
