Hey guys and gals,

So I was an unfortunate victim of my Canon 5D Mark III failing to power on this evening, and I am completely stumped as to what is going on.

I have had the camera for around 1.5 years, use it in moderation, probably about 5-6 small shoots and have never had a problem with it.

I haven't used my Mark III since late June or so. So it's been about 5 months? And tonight I planned on using it casually at an event. I was able to charge my battery for close to 30-40 minutes (which usually allows me at least an hour or so worth of shots.

Once at the event, I took my battery out, plopped it into my camera, and tried turning it on. NOTHING. No start up screen, no viewfinder, just complete dead(ness). Nada, nothing.

Soon after, I tried a bunch of things (taking the battery in and out, taking off the lens and putting a new one on, same with the CF card.) I don't use a dual battery. Still NOTHING.

So as of right now, I am currently recharging my battery, and plan on leaving it charging overnight while I sleep and until it is 100% recharged. From there, I'll check in the AM to see if everything is ok.

But in case of it still not working, what kind of fixes or solutions have you guys found with problems like this? Doesn't seem like I'm the first one to encounter a problem like this but would like to hear any solutions you guys have found.

Everything is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Ouch! First, I can shoot all day with two batteries, so it sounds like that is a pretty anemic battery to start with. But if you suddenly have NO power, I would first closely check the battery compartment to make sure you are getting good contact and that the little white micro switch that presses back when the door closes is still working. If your battery is good and nothing powers on, it sounds like a broken circuit somewhere.

I travelled from overseas and I did not use my 5D Mark III for at least 2.5 months (shameful), but due to the move I had to concentrate on many other things.

When it came to time to haul out my camera I realized that the batteries had completely run flat and I would need to charge them, which I did. I left them overnight to charge and when I placed them into my camera the next day my camera would not turn on at all. I then got onto google and proceeded to search for a solution. Some people had problems with the battery door latch, which I fiddled which didn't work , I followed all the advise given on the web of individuals with the same problems, but to no avail.

I contacted a camera repair shop and they were unable to help me until the 2nd week of January 2020. I have had my camera for 5 years without any hitches whatsoever and truly love this camera. I decided to upgrade to Canon 5D IV which I received today.

The reason I am sharing this heck of a long story with you all is for the following reason:

The 5D Mark IV comes with 1 x LP-E6N battery which is slightly more powerful than the LP-E6 battery that came with my 5D Mark III. Having an inquisitive mind I decided to try the new battery in my dead 5D Mark III ....and guess what....it worked. What a shocker, if only I had tried a newer more powerful battery before I had purchased another camera.

Anyway, I thought I might share my story with anyone having the same issues. The 5D Mark III is an amazing Camera and rarely gives problems, so before you rush out and buy a new camera like I did, try the new battery first.

Not being funny, but the same thing happened to me.....try changing your battery to the LP-E6N. It worked for me. I tried everything, all the stuff from the web, I even tried fixing the battery cover which most have had an issue with. Try it ...Good luck

I am also facing this problem just now but when changing the battery, it does power on not all the time and then turning it off and then on, it will not power up the 2nd time. Is there any issue with circuit or something else?

as a guess.. could it possibly be the 'battery door' not making full contact when closed as it must be closed for the camera to power on.. clean the area around it with alcohol swabs etc...see if it's broken or loose.. I had this problem on my old 60d a few years back and that was the cause of it .. might be worth a try.. good luck
