Voting system works, at least it does for me

I know sometimes that the voting system is criticised but I think it does a pretty good job. I don't know if others do it but on challenges where I voted I sometimes go back and look and see how my votes compared with the results and it is surprising to me how often my votes reflect the overall result.

On the up close and personal challenge my top votes ended up in the following positions:

1, 3, 6, 2, 7, 12, 17, 72, 4, 5, 9

I'd be interested if others find the same level of compatibility or if anybody finds themselves wildly disagreeing with the majority.

I did not vote in the up close and personal but did in red and green. My top compared as -

3, 1, 5, 7, 10, 15, 22, 23, 40, 50, 81

My votes usual at least somewhat track the results in 80% of the challenges. In challenges that are somewhat ambiguously defined my votes seem closer to random. In my opinion most challenges have a few real standout photos and those placing in the middle have scores that are very close. There are also usually one or two that to me seem to be joke entries, so bad people have submitted just to see what happens.

That being said over time my votes track the results a bit less than in the past. I guess my tastes have become more biased over time?

I also have no subjectivity when it comes to my own entries. Some that I enter thinking they might not do well, finish in the top third. A couple of my favorite all time photos have finished dead last. I've entered about 400 times and I'm surprised every time.

81 definitely shows how subjective it is

I concur with your last paragraph I am disappointed when a shot I though was good bombed and I'm surprised that others that are OK did better than I expected.

Well you seem to reflect the voting public at fine dining

I voted on A to Z letter C with

3, 4, 5, 21, 71 ,2, 13, 14

pity for 64 and 71 they didn't have lots of us voting for them

If everyone voted fairly and thoughtfully as you have all done, then the system would run smoothly, and everyone would be happy with the results hey received in their chosen challenges.

Unfortunately, there are still far too many members who feel that they can't be bothered to vote, so they leave it to others, but expect those others to vote for their works of art.

TX PhotoDoc has never voted in a single one of the 1,983 entries he's entered in challenges, and actually wrote to me saying, 'Voting is a too time consuming chore for me.' What do you do with attitudes like this?

And then there are the sandbaggers, who mess up the results of many of our challenges.

Not always, I'm pleased to say. I've just seen today's outcome of 'My Best Photo of the Week' and the sandbaggers had missed their opportunity to mess with the results.

Generally, my favorites end up in the middle to end of the rankings, though sometimes one of the pictures I like will be in or near the top ten. Most of the time when I vote, I just vote for a handful of images, those that I like well enough to give 4 or 5 stars to, and it seems that the less defined the theme (such as in My Best Photo of the Week), the worse my favorites end up placing. In the most recent MBPW (which I believe all start with 70 entries), my one 5-star vote ended up 58th, and in the previous MBPW, my 5 and 4 star votes placed 4, 68, 53, 61, and 67. I actually picked a winner in the MBPW that ended October 26th; my 5-star votes in that challenge ended up 1, 30, 38, 47, and 55.

A few other examples:

my five 5-star favorites in Fall Color (115 entries) finished 13, 43, 46, 78, 89

I did a little better in A-Z week 1, A (72 entries). My two 5-star votes placed at 30 and 57, but my 4-star votes were 3, 9, 11, 28, 42, and 49.

my six 5-star votes in iPhone Photography (48 entries) placed at 5, 22, 26, 27, 43, and 44

One example of a challenge in which my votes exactly reflected the final placements was the Butcher @ Work challenge. There were only three entries, but their final order exactly matched my order of preference.

I am always surprised by the results, some which win I would have given only a 3, and some which I have given 5 come near last, it certainly isn't a sign of expertise, so I enter for the fun of it and will not complain if I am an also ran.

I just won my first challenge, after entering probably 20 times. I usually end up in the top third. This very same winning photo was entered a few months ago and only took 38th! And I also don't really think it was the best photo in this challenge. (An A to Z of Subjects- Week 12, L)

BTW, I often disagree with the results, having seen a few high scoring images that I consider snapshots
