5D IV battery issues?

I have a 5D III and IV. I'm finding that the 5D IV, with the new battery, is being depleted much more rapidly than the III. Nothing scientific, but I can usually take 500-600 shots on 1 battery on the III, whereas with the IV I'm running out around 250 shots, GPS and WiFi off, no video and very little chimping. Anyone else noticing a difference?

I am experiencing the same thing! I wonder if it is the new processor? Very disappointing as on my 5D3 I could usually shoot all day and now it's like a few hours per battery.

Good to know it's not just me. I have a ton of batteries, but always appreciated the III's longevity. Maybe I need that battery grip after all...

Yes - I am also noticing that it runs down quicker than my 80D.

I make sure that WiFi is turned off unless I am using it. And I understand that GPS also eats up the battery too.

I think that has been one of the knocks on the 5DIV.

I prefer to carry more extra batteries than use a grip. Both of the bodies I use most require the same battery.

Hi, I was using some worn in lpe6n batteries at the weekend and got 888 shots and still had 33% of the battery left.

wifi and gps is off

I took over 4000 shots the weekend before last on mine. I have the battery grip but both batteries were at around 70-75% by the end of 10 hours of shooting.

well this is familiar.. I said the exact same thing with horrendously poor battery life about the 7dMkII with GPS turned off that I bought last year that I sent back to Amazon for a refund after 3 weeks ..also AF issues with Canon lenses I had-- Canon issued a firmware update 2 months later for the AF issue.. wasn't about to play 'repair-tag' with Canon

all I was met with was that I was wrong and all the 'burst shooters' came out of the woodwork telling me they get 2K 4K 6K 11K shots on a single battery charge.. my guess is the same will happen here.. hopefully they won't

good luck on the battery issue

my Canon 80d sure beats using that ol' Petri 7s

Using a 7D Mk II with a "fully charged" 3rd. party battery yesterday, I was surprised how poor the performance was. So I fully discharged the battery by putting the camera into its slide show mode until it stopped; and then fully recharged the 3rd party battery. This raised its rating from 59% to 99%. Hopefully this means I'll get more life when shooting.

I have also some troubles withe battery, I think there is a generell failure with the power management. After 1 week (the power was off, also WIFI and so on...) the battery is total empty - after a call to my dealer - I will get some information more today or tomorrow about this issue. --> maybe that's the reason for the update that maybe will come...

When I first got my 5DIV, a few weeks ago, I fully charged the battery, then took about a couple of dozen shots, as well as a couple of HD (not 4K) movies about thirty seconds each. Wifi and GPS were both off. A couple of days later I checked the battery, expecting it to be around 90 to 95%. It was 75%.

Since then, I've been touring with the camera, and battery consumption has been better, although it does seem higher than with the 5DIII. I usually have the GPS in mode 2 and switch off the camera when it's not in use.

Battery consumption performance is not as good as I'd hoped.

My last battery went 828 shots with heavy (mostly) live view.

I'm on my first charge but only gotten 440 shots and have 9% left. GPS and WiFi off, no videos, reviewing some of the images with magnifyier. Yes, a little disappointing at this point, coming from 6D. Maybe will get better with a few charge cycles. Hopefully.

Same, here. I feel the battery doesn't last long. I used on my III the battery grip which I don't have yet for the IV but it drains the battery faster (also without WiFi)

I'm getting good results by keeping the Wi-Fi, GPS, and touch screen all disabled.

Basically - We have a more powerful CPU/processor on this camera. More features like wifi and GPS. Along with a much larger sensor. Expecting the very same battery to last as long as the prior version with less power requirements does not make much sense.

I for one am happy that canon decided to keep the same battery so that we don't have to invest in a whole new bevy of batteries. I think I can live with having to swap out the batteries a bit more.

So - for me - it's Kudo's to Canon for allowing me to use the very same battery on my 80D as my 5div.

I am pleased with the choice they made here.
It cost me nothing but the time to swap to an extra battery.

OK - thanks everyone for your comments. The new battery for the 5D IV (same as 7DII and 5DS/R) is slightly more powerful than the 5D III battery, even though the same size. Was thinking perhaps that would offset some of the increased capacity of this camera. Easy enough to switch out, guess the III spoiled me though, it will shoot all day and night without a battery change. Canon specs note 900 estimated for IV and 950 for III, with the obvious caveats regarding type of use. One thing I don't have disabled is touch screen, perhaps that drains more juice than I realized. I'm going to be shooting with a III and IV side by side at an event in a couple of weeks, which should provide an opportunity for a better comparison. If it's a significant difference far below Canon's estimates, despite having GPS and WiFi disabled, maybe I'll contact them. In any case, first world problems...

early adopters of any tech are likely to find issues. sorry to hear this. lets hope canon sort it out.

having said that there haven't been too many complaints so far which is great but battery life is a big deal. whats the point of adding wifi gps etc if everyone turns them off for fear of draining the battery even faster.

have you written to canon?

I am having the same issue with battery only lasting about 60 shots which included about half hour with it tethered. I can shoot all day with mkiii tethered but not the mkiv. I have been in contact with dealer and they seem to indicate this might be normal. More testing needed I think but this is not good as I shoot tethered nearly everyday in the studio and at this rate I'll need to get another 3 or 4 batteries!
