Similar experience with a Kenko 1.4.That is very interesting to me. My 60D will not AF with the centre point with my 400/5.6L and neither my genuine Canon 1.4x MkII with the pins taped nor with my non-reporting Teleplus MC 1.5x. But both will AF very reliably with any of the other 8 AF points.Just FYI for anybody interested.
The 70D will AF quite well with the 400 f/5.6L and my Tamron non-reporting 1.4x TC. It's not officially documented anywhere, but it's capable enough for BIFs...
Good luck Ken. I don't have a Canon TC any longer or I'd test it for you. Folks reported (years ago) that the outer points worked for them while the center did not (various combinations of lens, TC, and body). I've never gotten a (taped) Canon TC to AF for me at f/8 tho, with any points. That is very interesting to me. For birding all I need is a single point but the centre point would be nicer.Just FYI for anybody interested.

My (400/TC) combo did not work at all with the T4i or 50D. It was marginal with the 30D.
But it sure hit a home run on the 70D, even when water was the background. Having this extra capability was definitely one of the reasons I have not upgraded to the 7D2 yet. Though that 80D is really tempting, esp if the IQ gets a healthy bump.
Best of luck to you!

If you shoot with an f/4 lens with a 2x teleconverter, f/8 is wide open. If you shoot with a f/5.6 lens with a 1.4x teleconverter, f/9 is wide open.
What's your point?
