Canon Pro-100 strange wifi problem--any suggestions?

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a Canon Pro-100. I already have one at another location (another country), so this is my second unit. This one is presenting a rather odd wifi problem; the other does not.

It is connected to my wifi network. But when I turn the printer on, it will never connect the first time. I must turn it on once, then turn it off, then turn it on again--even though the first time the wifi light is solid, and not blinking. I can't for the life of me figure out why turning the printer on a second time would be successful and the first time is not. The problem repeats itself daily. The same model in the other location connects like a charm every time.

Does anyone else have this problem, and if so is anyone aware of a solution? A wired connection is not feasible because the printer is in a different room from my computers. However, the wifi connection is solid. Once it is connected, it never disconnects. Its just the initial connection that is problematic.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about that issue. But actually a positive that it runs so well through WiFi-didn't expect it too. I use Ethernet for everything and anything whenever possible.

Thanks for the replies. I can definitely live with it, and I will leave the printer turned on for a few days at a time if doing a lot of printing. There is no point in calling Canon because this was purchased from Canon Brasil. If you live in North American or Europe, think of your worst customer service experience and multiply the severity by 10--and that's Brasilian service (even though products cost two or three times as much here). However, it did come with a two year guarantee so at least I'm covered for a long while should the wifi conk out totally. Just as an aside, Canon paper is horribly priced here, although the ink for this printer is not all that high in relation to North American prices. But it does take a month for delivery from the Brasil Canon store so I've already ordered replacement cartridges. I am in Canada frequently enough that I'll just bring paper from there because I already have a bunch sitting there for the same printer installed in my place in Canada. The problem is size---A4 is the common size here, letter in Canada. Frames in Brasil are all A4.

AS jtoolman says you can configure the printer in the Maintenance tab of the driver to Auto Off, which will put the printer to sleep after a set time period and then wake it up when you call for a print.

But, if you are on a network you get a pop-up window that says if on a network it never goes to sleep.

I'd recommend you view your router's activity including the system log during both attempts. It may be a simple configuration change, such as assigning its own IP address. If your router is dual band, maybe dedicating one band to the printer will put it out of competition from other devices.

I had a similar problem when I tried to setup my wireless connection. Don't know how but I showed two different printers and ports, one for the regular driver and a second for the WPS driver. My system, router, and printer were all having problems making connection. Finally, I realized my wife and grandchildren were using their equipment and my router was making assignment changes during the install. A printer network config printout showed me there was a mismatch, and Windows printer properties showed a port issue as well. I saw Joe's video and thought it would be that easy, but it wasn't. :-(

My fix was to make a static assignment in my wireless router, uninstall the printer and drivers, reset the printer with a 10-light reset. Then I installed the printer again as a 1st time setup and all went well. I now have both drivers sharing the same port. The Canon IJ Network Tool may help. It showed the port mismatch with the drivers and at one time couldn't connect to the WPS driver. This may be what you need to do as well to help the system make the wireless assignment the first time around.

Be aware the when you turn the printer off with the front power button, it seals off the cartridges. Mine is always plugged into A/C. This keeps the head and cartridges from drying out. I keep mine plugged into a UPS 24/7 to preserve the heads and ink.

I revisited my problem a few days ago after an absence of a few weeks. After my original post I initially tried a fixed IP, with no success. So I decided to remove all Canon associated software, drivers, installations etc and start again. I again had the same problem without a fixed IP, but this time around changing the printer to a fixed IP solved the problem. I'm now connecting via wi-fi without having to turn on the printer a second time. Problem solved. Thanks again to everyone for their advice.
