I have cross posted this on the Canon 5D forum since that's what the flash is paired with.

I am using my 600 EX-RT as a master to fire a 430EX slave in optical mode. Using the 600 EX, attached to a Canon 5D mk III, I can fire the 430EX and the 600 simultaneously with no problems. However no matter what I do, I cannot disable the master. I have tried to disable the master in two different ways, with the same result: Using the in-camera External Speedlight Contol, if I disable the master (icon indicates master is disabled), the master still fires. Alternatively, if I attempt to disable the master using the in-flash command (Menu 2) and the icon correctly says the master won't fire, it still does. In both cases, both the master and slave fire. Any ideas?

The master always have to fire a small amount of light for optical communication with the slaves.

It seems like in either setting (master disabled vs enabled), the amount of flash appears the same. Test shots confirm this.

As far as I know ... the communication flash is not noticable in the shot for the most cases. I think that it is a very low powered.

Someone in the Canon 5D forum solved the mystery: You cannot have Flash Group set to ALL. It must be set to either A:B or A:B C. Once I changed the Flash Group from ALL to A:B, then disabled the master, it worked perfectly.

Thanks Jason….I did look at page 55, and it says nothing about changing the Flash Group from ALL to A:B. Maybe that's intuitive for some, but not me, apparently. Anyway, I appreciate everyone's input.
